The History Channel I want...just doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Sep 30, 2008 3:11 AM
I've been a big fan of the History Channel for many years, though I must admit over the last 7-8 years my once dire urge to watch has shifted to a gradual...I'll watch it as something to fall asleep to, literally, at bed time.

The only shows that truly grabbed my interest are seemingly never on anymore and I'm lucky to catch them at odd hours.

When I browse on over to the online store, none of what I like is in the selection. I scavenge internet streaming sites in a petty attempt to catch the History Channel in its former glory, often to see it removed within a week -- which should be done, just the pain comes when it's never made available through other means.

I can't even remember my favorite shows off the top of my head anymore its been so long, some are recent, just rarely shown. How about Great Scientists, what an informative show and the narration was and is superb. Think you can find that wonderful work on the History Channel Store, not a chance. My other favorite serious to catch involves philosophers, that wonderfully brief, though all telling description...leading your interest into the generations that followed them. In the store? You bet not.

I could go deep into those, but I won't. My true love formed with what was once a great source of learning and in some cases still is...but greatly fading.

What has the History Channel become? Do people honestly come to droves to watch a reality show about loggers? Does driving over a frozen lake need a second season to explore? Do people in their right minds want to hear whack toon stories about UFO's? Is history riding along side an archaeologist as he does his work -- why not just get a similar job? I want the old History Channel, the one that informed us of societies past, explained the molding of our brains and the formation of modern religion without the psycho-babble of some modern day dollar first bible second world will end tomorrow preacher.

But, by god, you can sure buy all that garbage at the online store and expect it to be on the schedule for the next eight weeks unless you have Tivo or plan to stay up until 5am for History Classroom and at odd times a decent old show. Why can I not find that great old content? Why can't the new content be covered in the old style! Why when I'm learning about mushrooms do I need to be with a modern day seller! Can't I just be shown lush images and brought through history on their various discoveries with pleasant reenactments. I would get much more entertainment watching the King taste the best mushroom he has ever had only to fall over dead then see some mushroom hunter in the woods telling me I can get 500 dollars for a bag by picking in burned woods. That is what the discovery channel is for, I WANT HISTORY!

Look, I don't care if they don't stock the shelves of the classic material anymore. But can any kind soul here direct my to a station like the old History Channel? Anyone, do I need to start up some competition to get a fair shot at the old content?

I don't want to bring the hate to one more show, but I will. Dog Fights, that show was and is complete garbage. I respect the stories and the pilots, but let them narrate the damn thing and show me images, give me video, throw me old audio, make me feel like I'm there. I don't need the computer generated crap, why wouldn't I just hop on my Nintendo.

Oh well, times change and people are entertained by crop circles and men doing their job, not real history. I guess I'll just dream of another station coming along in the future.

Let me just give a few examples, I would love explanations on how they relate to history:

http://www.history.com/minisites/life_after_people Ok, why does anyone care about life after people, THE WHOLE PREMISE OF THE SHOW IS ANTI-HISTORY.

I am at the top show page now...TOP SHOW.

Gangland? Are you serious right now, thanks for putting this crap on the air. So what did snoop dogg do in 1992, find out here...

UFO hunters, why don't we just take credibility and make a show about fairies.

Jurassic Fight Club, last time I check PRE-HISTORIC MEANT THERE WAS NO WRITTEN HISTORY. So, why don't we trash this and start right around the time written language was developed.

Ice Road Truckers, I guess for living in the coldest part of the continental 48 that I have no sympathy for their work. And what is history?

Human Weapon, ok here have three minutes to learn about the history behind the technique and another 57 minutes on practicing and fighting.

Tougher In Alaska, yes, this show informs...REALLY, not.

Star Wars...are we serious right now, someone just shoot me.

Sandhogs, am I watching life television or the History Channel?

Our Generation? This is already on the history channel...I mean, I know my parents are old, am I the only one looking for pre-1960 information? Even that is cutting it a bit close, can we at least let the dust settle for 60 years before we age ourselves.

I can go on and on with this garbage, there is a lot more just on the TOP shows page. Not to mention half the decent shows are done walking around right now which I absolutely despise. That is why I love old history books and not the modern crap. Read something from the early 20th century or the late 19th, so much more interesting then anything modern. The same is slowly being said for video history :(

I agree wholeheartedly! Thank God for DVRs! The other thing that makes me nuts is when you finally do get to see a good, quality program...THC wants you to pay $25 for 43 minutes of video.

I also agree. It's very disappointing, and others I've talked to say the same thing. But I guess the ratings must favor programming shows which have little or nothing to do with history. It won't be long before the name will change and all historic based shows will no longer be.

Just one more loss of a rare few channels I liked, and one more step towards giving me enough reason to junk the TV for good.

I agree with you 1000%. Their programming stinks. I once wrote them an email about their programs (they actively discourage this kind of feedback), and suggested they do a program on the 400,000 Axis prisoners of war in the United States in camps all over the country during WWII. Never heard from them.

By the way, they are owned by A&E. Could that have something to do with it?
