Dogfights DVD in 4:3 format?

Sep 6, 2007 5:03 AM
Wikipedia says that "the picture format on the DVD is 4:3 (1.33:1) even though the series was produced in anamorphic 16:9 widescreen".

Two questions:

1. Is this true?

2. If so, why? Why ruin the beautiful widescreen format, especially for people who pay extra!?

The Dogfights Wikipedia entry is here.

(I posted this in the Dogfights forum too, but I figured this might be a better place to get an official answer.)

Almost a week and still no reply.

The forum description says "just post your product question here and then check back in a day for a reply". Uh, right.

I watched the show (season 2) last year in the US and noticed the letterbox bars on the 4:3 standard TV set (nowadays all TV shows and programs are practically produced in 16:9 and high definition for international marketing and especially for the Japanese 16:9 HD market).

Because of an obvious technical error the Dogfights trailer for next week's program was shown in un-stretched 16:9 (that is a 4:3 image where the moon looks like an egg), prooving beyond any doubt that the show is available in anamorphic 16:9 widescreen.

When season 1 was announced for DVD I had an incredible hard time figuring out, whether the DVD release would feature an anamorphic, 16:9 widescreen image or the nowadays rather unusual DVD 'stone-age' letterboxed image.

Unfortunately, the latter seems to be the case which constitutes a 33% loss of picture resolution for owners of widescreen TVs (which is de facto ALL kinds of flat TVs).

I have already contacted some people that might be somewhat responsible in the DVD replication/production process of this outstanding docu program but I'm afraid that even 10 years after the introduction of the DVD and its 16:9 widescreen capability there are still many, many people that yet do not understand how it works (please, check it out on Wikipedia or change your DVD player's picture format to widescreen - a must do if you own a widescreen TV and want to enjoy 33% more sharpness. Don't "zoom" - "stretch" or "full" instead!).

I'm afraid that this forum might not be the means to get the message across. If you want to tell the world how excited you are about Dogfights, go to Amazon and write a review but make sure to mention you want the show in its native 16:9 widescreen - at least as long unless we finally and hopefully see a release on a Blu-Ray HD disc.

Clear Skies!
