Thanks Toomtie, Some still think Canada is a dominion of Britian. Which of course it isn't. Canada is a constitutional monarchy. In other words, the monarchy in Canada is recognized as the Head of State and centre of state authority. This role, however, is essentially symbolic; today, most real political power in Canada lies with elected politicians. The British North America Act , 1867 granted Canada semi-independence from the British Empire. The new nation had jurisdiction over its own domestic policy and issues. However, the British government retained control over foreign policy and any amendments to the Canadian constitution. Full constitutional independence was not achieved until 1982, with the patriation of the Constitution and the passing of the Canada Act.

I note tto that the'' Quebec Libre'' movement who provoked DeGaulle into making a diplomatic gaffe while visiting Canada seems to be very quiet or has Quebec achieved semi-autonomous status within Canada.? P.S. Whch famous Scottish novelist was Governor-General of Canada when war broke out in 1939?

The Quebecois are anything but very quiet, they're just having a hard time finding anybody who'll listen to them right now. Sir John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield Which Canadian Prime Minister was a Scottish born stone mason?

Nope Wirey-there is a corner ofEdinburgh Castle Esplenade in Edinburgh-that's the large parade ground in front of the Castle which is permanently Nova Scotian territory because it marks the spot where James Sixth of Scotland and first of THE uNITED kINGDOM AFTER 1603-HANDED OPUOUT THE ORIGINAL BARONETCIES OF NOVA SCOTIA which started the Scots colonisation of Nova Scotia proper in Canada. in the 1600's I learned this from two ladies from Nova Scotia whom Iwas squiring in 1963 and Iwas photographed with them standing on Nova Scotian territory in Edinburgh Castle back then.

Good. We Canadians may seem polite, but I assure you, we are at least as violent as, I don't know, the Norweigans. Well, maybe not that violent. -- Ever vigilant, Ever primed, Ridding the boards Of vice and crime!

Aw!-I though that the Norweigians were good natured-well except for Vidkun Quisling and some Nowegian resistence members opposing the Nazis. Wirey are you from Halifax Nova Scotia?-and if so do they have a memorial to the convoy personnl crossing the Atlantic?- for whom Halifax N.S. would be thier last ever sighting of Terra Firma befotre being sunk by UI-Boats.

I am from Halifax. There is a monument, and I know I've seen it, but with God as my witness I can't remember where. Halifax is a place I would recommend to anyone for a visit. History abounds (for a New World location). You can visit this which is far neater than you'd think. -- Ever vigilant, Ever primed, Ridding the boards Of vice and crime!

A rather famous Member of Parliament from Quebec, who's name escapes me, said at the time "When my King is at war, I am at war", or something like that. He probably couldn’t help himself. Did you know that Queen Victoria's birthday is still a statutory holiday over here? Victoria Day’s is celebrated on the last Monday before or on 24 May, it’s considered the 1st weekend of the summer in the south, now more colloquially known as the “May Two-Four Weekend” (Two-Four being slang for a case of 24 beer). As a Scot, you might also appreciate that there are almost as many people claiming Scottish decent living in Canada, as there are people living in Scotland.
