Britain's youngest ever merchant seaman casualty honoured

Jun 25, 2009 11:38 AM
Edwar Eearnshaw -at just 14 the youngest ever British Merchant Marine to perish in action in WW2 is now going to be properly honoured.
A cabin boy on board a British merchant ship which was sunk in 1941 when the lad was just 14 -he has been buried in an Edinburgh , Scotland, cemetery in a poorly marked grave adorned with a simple wooden cross.
Now this will be replaced by a proper granite memorial stone and his grave rededicated.
May this 14 year old man/child casualty who gave his all for his country rest in peace.

Didn't this fellow lie about his age, and until recently discovered certificates it was Raymond Steed who had been so honored as the youngest fatality in the UK's Merchant Marine service?

How about the oldest of the "old salts" of the British Merchant service to have perished in WW2? I found this on another forum, and was astounded at the man's advanced years!

Name: BRYAN, THOMAS
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Civilian
Regiment: Civilian War Dead
Age: 81
Date of Death: 07/09/1940
Additional Information: Seaman, Merchant Navy; of 164 Mortlake Road. Died at 164 Mortlake Road.
Casualty Type: Civilian War Dead
Cemetery: WEST HAM, COUNTY BOROUGH

As I read the item, it would appear he was kiled while ashore, and at home. But still a serving member of the Merchant Marine? Is that what is implied here?

I did see a number of British subjects who were serving in the Merchant Marine, and perished at sea while in their mid-seventies.

Poon Lim spent 133 days on the lifeboat before being rescued.

Thanks for the correction Uncle Sam but even so it's amazing that he survived more than 100 days.

I knew this would be a Scot.

Are you not tired of flogging Scotland here like an used car-sales man, or, a watchtower magazine? You come across like some uber-nationalist - like the Nazis in fact. I think we take the point by now: Scotland created the world, single-handedly won ww2 alone and won the American war of Independence as well.

Do you see any other nationality (English, American, Zulu for that matter) pursing, rather desperate strands of antique genealogy in an attempt to prove they had in fact built the pyramids?

No I am not and I make no aplogies for what you are complaining about so if you don't like my posts ignore them.
Being proud of one's heritage is not being an ultra nationalist which I am not. Indeed, if you took the trouble to really read my posts you'd see that I am very international minded.
Have you ever visited the American War cemetery at Madingley Cambridge?-no ?-I Ithought not- but I have..

I cannot say I would be ever interested in visiting an American war cemetery but well done.

Cook discovered Australia - do you see an English person going ''did you know that Cook discovered Australia? just one of the more important English personae to make a major impact on world history'' (my attempts at a Toom post). No one on here flogs there country like a cheap second-hand Volvo more than you do.

I love Scotland and the Scots(not the left-wing housing estate lot that is) and have Scottish family myself - my surname is descended from Scottish aristocracy. Your posts however contains that element of, well, nationalistic desperation.

Gentlemen, can we settle this grudge match with a poll ?

sean82uk, maintains that Toomtabard is overly nationalistic and bores everyone with positive comments about his countrymen

Toomtabard, has insinuated that sean82uk is English

Cast your vote as "T" to maintain the status quo or "s" to indicate you agree with sean82UK

To The Winner: Well, we all know what the winner gets

To The Loser:

if, Toomtabard loses he must publicly admit to secret fantasies involving Teotonic vixens dressed as SS officers complete with rubber hoses and brass knuckles

if, sean82uk loses he must hand deliver a bouquet of red roses to the doorsteps of Madonna's London mansion

I also am saddened that he doesn't mention gallant Scots from the Napoleonic War - enough with all this - Scots in the American Revolutionary war - nonsense. Where is Sir John Moore? I haven't once seen you mention Moore of Corunna fame who was from Glasgow!

PS
Oh, you did mention Sgt Ewart of the Scots Greys; I stand corrected. But where is Gordon of the 92nd Highlanders as well?

It’s been my impression that Scots in general have a massive inferiority complex, in particular when in comparison to English accomplishments. It could be because they are evidently incapable of running their own country and must have London taking them by the hand on any real decisions regarding Scotland. Scots grab at anything and claim it to be a Scottish accomplishment.

I was not impressed with the place. Nasty weather, the worst food in the world, and they speak a language that sounds like a troop of chimps squabbling over some peanuts. They appear to be quite content to have London help themselves to what is left of their petroleum reserves. I fear their gene pool has been damaged irreversibly by immigration.
