What was the worst phase of the Dark Ages

The fall of Rome-The Goths destoryed Rome which caused the beginning of the dark ages
The plague-Bubonic plauge killed millions of people
The Viking era-The vikings caused terror to monastaries and villages
The divide of the Roman empire-Romans divided there empire but it cause west Rome to fall
The Barbarians-They were the main problem of the dark ages

You have to consider whether the Barbarians actually knew that their behaviour was barbaric. If they did, that would be premeditated barbarism which is not nice at all.

Perhaps they were under duress when they performed the barbaric acts. Lets face it, the Romans were after them, they were chasing each other, food was scarce. Not an easy life.

I dont think they were the main problem but, they did benefit the most when the lights came back on.

All of it except the Vikings because they are awesome and struck fear within Europeans by the sea.
