Houston Mctear, who ran for Baker High School in Florida during the early 1970's, is credited with being the only man to ever run 9.00 in the 100 yard dash. Since nobody keeps records for this event anymore, it looks like this will stand forever.
As a side note, it has been speculated that the current group of world class sprinters, the men who can run sub 10.00 for 100 meters, are probably passing the 100 yard mark below 9.00 seconds. But because nobody's interested in this event anymore, there's never been a check just to see. It would be easy to do, it's just that no one wants to. What a shame.

I believe Ivory Crocket was credited with the fastest 100 yard dash time of all time with a 9.0 . Houston McTear's time was not ratified because of the conditions of the timing. Even though Crockets time was manual it was during a sanctioned meet. McTears was hand timed at an unsanctioned high school event. I knew both of them personally and they were both great runners and athletes.

Some notable 100-yard dash runners are the following:

Jim Thorpe could run it in 10 seconds flat in 1912.
Eric Liddell set a British record of 9.7 seconds in 1924.
Ron Paul, United States Presidential candidate, ran it in 9.7 seconds.
Jesse Owens tied the world record of 9.4 seconds in 1933.
Bob Hayes set a record of 9.35 seconds in 1962, and a manual time of 9.1 in 1964.
Charles Greene ran it in 9.21 seconds in 1967.
Houston McTear apparently ran it in 9.0 seconds while in high school in the early '70's, but this was hand-timed. He later registered a time of 9.30 seconds, in 1975.
Ivory Crockett achieved a manual time of 9.0 in 1974.

Jim Prewitt from Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, Tx had the fastest time ever recorded in the 100 yard dash:

9.2 (1972)

Plus threw for over 4000 yds and 42 TDS as QB

Also ran for 6 tds including a 98 yard td run

This dude is truly amazing!!!!

He's in Radio Broadcasting and can be heard on 101.9 The Wolf in Sacramento, Ca www.1019thewolf.com

I had always thought that my father was 'pulling my leg' when he told me that he ran a 9.7, in high school (1962); Then I realized it was the 100 YDS., back then. After checking it [Pacific High School - San Bernardino], I was amazed that my dad, in fact, WAS "the fastest 'white boy' in the Inland Empire"(in his time). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to apologize to him (for doubting), posthumously :(.

Actually its not THE record, but records. Because my high school also has a runner that ran the 100 yard dash in 1900 and it says national record next to it. I believe his name had Ward in it or something, it was a few years agoo i don't remember.
