HISTORICALLY, WHY IS CANNABIS ILLEGAL?

Oct 7, 2008 1:33 PM
After reading almost 10 books on marijuana's history, I have come to a couple conclusions regarding the criminalization of pot. I am a Canadian student who supports marijuana legalization but more importantly, I support the truth; something that the history of cannabis lacks. I ask all of you intelligble people, what historical influences have tainted the public's view on cannabis? Please reply!

The demonizing of cannabis didn't really begin until the 30's which also saw the founding and rapid growth of modern pharmaceutical companies, go figure. The fact of the matter is that cannabis is about as close to a wonder drug as you can get, it alleviates pain, cures nausea, and despite what the propaganda machines of the War on Drugs say, in small doses it has shown to actually improve cognition. These claims alone warrant much more impartial research to legitimize the science behind cannabis. The surprising defense that the anti-marijuana lobbyists use is that smoking marijuana is four times as likely to lead to lung cancer, but any high school student can tell you that you by no means have to smoke marijuana to gain its effects.

Historically speaking cannabis has an excellent track record, nobody seems to have an issue with it until the 20th century. Tobacco and alcohol certainly can't say this, and yet George Washington grew cannabis along with tobacco and brewing grains. And for those who argue it was hemp not cannabis he was growing, he writes in his personal records that he was sexing them. The only reason you sex cannabis is to prevent the plants from breaking down THC, which means he was most likely smoking it or selling it for smoking. I have personally been told by the son of a police officer who served in the 1920's - 1940's that cannabis literally grew on the side of the road, and no one said a word about anyone who pulled over to pick some pot. Our stigma of cannabis being an evil weed is a modern invention and an unfounded one at that, that being said I welcome other opinions on my statement.

One reason the government wants pot illegal is that it would be nearly impossible to control it's distribution by taxing it. Anybody with a green thumb, a grow light and a few seeds can grow it.

It's simple, they had to give all those unemployed prohibition agents something to do. No other reason.

Washington grew hemp which is still used to make rope and is still legally grown. While it is still cannabis it is a much different type then the kind grown to smoke. It has a very low THC level and has been developed over the centuries to make hemp ropes that have been used by the world navies for generations.
During WWII the US government paid farmers in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska to grow hemp.

I think it's because the government is afraid of how much money they'll be making by saving people instead of killing them. I really think it's stupid that people haven't realised that Cannabis use actually saves lives not kill them, and there are no known historic deaths caused by Cannabis use alone. Hemp is one of the best products we have in this world and yet we're ignoring that, i don't know why we're being so stupid but until "Ruffee Madness" started the people started getting scared of Cannabis, it's a pity. Then when world war two came hemp was supposedly good again. "Hemp for victory they called it", when the war was over Hemp became bad again. But atleast we still have Cannabis day, one day it will be legalized, and those smart politician's against it will feel really smart to see how much good it's doing. Tobacco is the real killer here and yet, we sell it legally to the public...wow what have we become. Read The Shafer report 1972 and The wooton Report 1968 England, they really don't tell people these days about the wonder seed...it has so many great uses and the governement knows that, they say it has medicinal use just to justify their use of it but they know there's no harm in it, for 10,000 years Cannabis has been used throughout history for several uses, why is it labled bad today, the answer is in the early 20th century.

There is documentation in which Washington writes of making sure that the certain strains of hemp buds don't get fertilized. There is only ONE reason to do this...and it has nothing to do with making rope.
