French settlements in the New World [prroh and everyone else]

May 13, 2009 11:09 AM
As I recall from my American history classes in high school, my teacher said that when the French settled what is now Canada in the 16th or 17th centuries, the French settled the area primarily to trap animals for their furs. Did the French settle what is now Canada primarily in order to trap animals for their furs?

If not, why did the French settle the area that is now Canada in the 16th and 17th centuries?

Trapping animals was far from Francis I's mind when he sent Jacques Cartier to Canada in 1531. He was looking for a Northwest Passage to Asia. Trapping animals buy French settlers is just a way of taking advantage of an abundant resource.
