Ah, now I see it's only Samuel Morse you're on about? Sheesh, I was worried for a moment there; I thought y'd been getting tossed on cider with Mikie in Bristol. Yes, perhaps this is a worthy subject to consider the telegraph's impact on the world. Wasn't it Alfred Vail who actually came up with the Morse code. I seem to recall that Great Britain had a different system of it's own for the empire. -- Bier; Die Ursache und die Lösung für alle Probleme des Lebens.

Ah, now I see it's only Samuel Morse. Only Samuel Morse? While Vail had greater scientific competence than Morse and improved upon the latter's crude electromagnetic technology he (Vail) always denied that the code was his. Morse code was enhanced and internationalised becoming Continental Morse (European Standard) and later International Morse. The original American Morse gradually became obsolete. To the best of my knowledge, however, the world's first encrypted code for telegraphic transfer was the invention of the man whose name it still bears. I thought this link was good in demonstrating what a simple (but powerful) concept Morse Code was/is. As later experience proved it wasn't even necessary to have a mechanical decoding device as a competent receiver could translate the code directly. http://www.scienceclarified.com/Sp-Th/Telegraph.html

There is no denying the impact that Samuel Morse's invention has had, truly it ushers in the media age & changes the world. It wasn't all that log ago I used to see Western Union offices, people would still "wire" funds into an account. Forgive me Philip for first thinking of Samuel Smith instead Samual Morse; the "dot dah" is foriegn me me as we here refer to "dot dash". Don't think me unkind Words are hard to find. They're only cheques I've left unsigned From the banks of chaos in my mind. And when their eloquence escapes me Their logic ties me up and rapes me. De do do do de da da da Is all I want to say to you De do do do de da da da Their innocence will pull me through. De do do do de da da da Is all I want to say to you -The Police- -- Bier; Die Ursache und die Lösung für alle Probleme des Lebens.
