How UFO hunters could be made into a show worth watching

Oct 30, 2009 7:54 AM
Hello everyone,

UFO hunters has potential and could be a very good show if they reworked it a little.

First, they should have a hardcore skeptic that would keep the believers on the team honest, someone who would force them actually defend their hypothesis.

Second, Bill "I wear my sunglasses at night" Birnes has got to go. I mean come on, I beliieve that people should have an open mind but not so open that your brain is leaking out of your ears. As for example, the picture of the guy in the black suit, Bill seemed to think that that was absolute proof that the MIB phenomenon is real. When really it proves nothing more than the fact that yes, sometimes men wear suits that are black.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on how this show could have been improved?

Realistic sketicism would have been great, but that's not part of UFOlogy. Jumping to conclusions is what they do, and never trying to eliminate the most likely reasons first.

See a light? That's a UFO.
See a light headed towards an airport? That's a UFO on a secret mission.
See a light headed towards an airport with wings and airplane body? That's a UFO on a secret mission hiding itself as a plane.

And don't forget, any time there is a light in the sky that is not immediately identified, that means it is automatically aliens from another part of the universe. Any time someone tells a story of seeing something unusual in the sky, that means they are automatically telling the truth and reporting things exactly as they really happened. </sarcasm>

Fire the entire cast and crew and get some folks with a true investigative background and when they recruit a skeptic, make it a true skeptic. Also do some background on the "eyewitnesses" and can the theatrics and rock video graphics.

RESEARCH!!! These guys do absolutely no real research, they take a bunch of stories and jumble them together.

Research? You mean just because Bill says something is true isn't enough? LOL

Agreed. There is very interesting and awe inspiring science behind some of the phenomena; sadly, this program does not showcase any of it.

Could be made into a show worth watching by replacing everything inculding the creative concepts...maybe keep the name. In this day of cake shows and nannies and "housewives" and divas...bla, bla, bla...it should not be hard to produce something vastly superior to this show in everyway that people will watch and enjoy.

Interviewing some lady and her neighbor (apparently the only 2 who did not call the police on people for releasing balloons [on fire]) in Long Beach for taking photos of airplanes in a banking turn and a burning balloon should not make it to the cutting table. The fact that they have months to plan, execute, produce and edit, and then air this stuff is evidence that the show is not a serious enterprise, but more likely an experiment to see us, the viewing public in the ridiculous light in which we illuminate ourselves, yea, me too...but anything is better than watching somebody on lithium frost a cake, or 'pimp' somebody's something. Or the news, which is unwatchable

Pathetic comes to mind

Maybe it is awe inspiring science, or maybe awe inspiring geometry-

I am speaking to angle of view here, BTW.

I'm still waiting for that day to come to pass.

Back in seasons 1 & 2, Dr. Ted Acworth did challenge some of the hypotheses on the show and perform research/experiments to explore out mundane explanations. I did enjoy that aspect of the show. But I think Bill's awesome. Don't hate, appreciate!

I appreciate verified fact and sound theory, research, and credible hypothesis, not someone spouting their personal opinion that is based on the sliver of second and third hand stories and I also appreciate cohesive story telling, this Bill "my sunglasses are welded to my head" Birnes seems incapable of

OMG I laughed so hard after reading this post. And its 100% true. Its sad actually because UFOlogy might actually be considered a valid and logical course of study if it wasn't for the people who basically see what they want to see. Its ironic that they sabotage themselves so readily.

I love the part about the ufo being on a mission disguised as a plane... lmao classic.

I think that if they had a person similar to myself with an aviation background the show could be much better. So much of what I see on this program I can identify fairly rapidly. Why not a little bit of Mythbuster experimentation? Try and recreate some of these pictures and video. It would be interesting to show how easy it is to mistake every day things for extraoidinary objects.

I agree CvilleDon, I am a firm believer in UFO's but I myself can debunk 99% of the sightings.

Well, personally, i think the show could be improved by a more balanced approach of the skeptical vs. the believers. The skeptic in the show isn't a real skeptic, he is too easily swayed in his opinions by the other two.

They could do better fact checking and story verifying, than just going on their idea of the veracity and intent of the story teller. They could stop jumping to wild conclusions and speculations when they see people wearing black, or see dark coloured helicopters fly over (Which, btw, in the area 52 episode, were dark green, and you could tell, but they insisted were black).

I have only seen a few episodes of the show, and i am not impressed. I am a believer, but i am also a skeptic. I'm a little bit of Mulder and Scully wrapped up in one, in that i want to believe, but i want to make sure i am not jumping off the deep end and chasing red herrings all over the place either. This show really is lacking in that healthy skepticism that a show like this needs. The hosts are exactly the kind of conspiracy theorists that are laughed at by everyone else, and ridiculed and debunked all over the place. This is the History Channel for crying out loud, and i really expected more from a program produced by the History Channel. But, maybe i shouldn't, since the only religious history they seem to want to cover is Christianity, or at least, mostly. But this show should be a lot better than it is.

First thing the show is already worth watching. If it wasn't then why is everybody talking about it all over these boards. You know who you are.I do have a idea on how to make the show even better than it already is.Bring in another guy just like Bill. Two bills for the for the price of one. That sounds like a hit show to me.
