You know darn well that sound does not travel near as well in the air as in water. The idea that we, with the equipment available at that time, could reliably hear a soviet nuke test by floating a mechanical ear into a non existent pocket in the atmosphere, over New Mexico; yeah, I find that kinda funny.

C'mon! An airborn accoustic device dedicated to hear nuke tests in the Soviet Union. Deployed above New Mexico? I'm starting to wonder if I should look into
Project Mogul a little more. Convenient explanation of what happened at Roswell, but only publicly floated (excuse the pun) decades after the fact. Hmmmmmm...

But are you an expert on this? Have you read the scientific papers it was developed from? Understand the technology?
Or just assume it couldn't work, so it didn't?

Occam's Razor
That basically means use the easy answer 1st, then move on to other explanations it the 1st doesn't work, so on and so on.
Reportedly Japan trying to use the air (pocket ) Jet stream? to bomb us... so that says wouldn't be a good ideal to put balloons in Japan or in US as they might hit same currents as bombs.

Japan sent balloons with small bombs on them across the Pacific on the jet stream. It wasn't very effective and didn't do much damage.

Skeptics claim that because Project Mogul was also in New Mexico, that increases the probability that it accounts for the debris field at the Foster Ranch. But actual Mogul records show that prevailing winds almost always took the balloons well away from the debris field area. Graphical plots of over 50 recorded flights and their crash sites demonstrate that only one flight possibly crashed within 40 miles of the ranch (Flight #38, Nov. 4, 1947) and maybe 2 more (Flight #10, July 5 & Flight #17, Sept. 10 ,1947) flew in the general direction and came within ~20 miles (but flew on to crash in other states). This demonstrates that it was actually quite improbable that any Mogul would have ended up at the Foster Ranch crash site. See also the "The Phony Balloon Trajectory" below, a fraudulent attempt to try to place a probably nonexistent flight at the ranch to "explain" the Roswell crash.

Maybe Alaska would have been better? By the way, we had seismometers at that time. Project Mogul. An NYU project not even listed in the archives at NYU.
