Swedish "empire" in 17.th century is interesting from following reasons. I think it is relatively little known by the public, existed relatively recent. And it shows a nation change its "identity" completely. In that age it was the most warlikwe nation of Europe, perhaps the world. The last near two centuries one of the most "quiet" places, keeping itself from international military involvement (neutrality).
Have ay author tried to deal with this transformation?

Sweden was the major northern power for over a hundred years and thats an achievement. Having notable victories over its neighbours such as Denmark-Norway and Russia.
You are right though not alot of people know about the empire. I told a friend once and he thought I was joking. Sad really. Still; Sweden should be remebered not only for regional conflicts but also fighting in Germany in the 17th centuary.

There are some Lutherans that remember Gustaff, although possibly more for his hymns than for his military campaigns .

I was most surprised to learn about Sweden being a regional naval power.
