Einstein and the Atomic Bomb

Nov 3, 2008 8:29 AM
Einstein always regretted being involved in the Atomic Bomb project. I wonder if that is mainly based on Japan being hit instead of Nazi Germany. Einstein's big fear that moved him to alter his pacifist ideals, was "what if Hitler had the bomb". Since Germany was defeated before they could, maybe Einstein felt that using the Atomic bomb was no longer worth creating. The big fear is no longer there, so any use of the bomb would be used less for deterrence but instead for showing military might (the same fear of what Hitler would do).

I guess my question is, did Japan try to create an atomic bomb too? Am I grasping at straws or is this a good theory?

During WWII, the US, Germany, the USSR, and Japan all had nuclear programs. I'm not entirely sure whether the UK had a nuclear program, too, but I would not doubt it.

The first fission weapons, also known as "atomic bombs," were developed jointly by the United States, Britain and Canada during World War II in what was called the Manhattan Project.

A reference in the History Channel website says he was denied security clearance to work directly on the Manhattan project because he was suspected of being a communist and possibly a Soviet spy.
