I enjoyed the show and thought it was interesting.

I couldn't, however, get away from the real world and political implications of what they were doing. I found it interesting that people were volunteering to be tortured for entertainment purposes in ways that were much more traumatic than what the United States has been accused of doing with prisoners of the War on Terror.

Some may say that there's no comparison, but I disagree. Mental anguish and pain is being inflicted on these volunteers. They are being placed in devices for extended periods of time (the pretzal, chinese water torture) and left alone. They are also being placed in situations where they are led to believe that significant harm and even death could occur (the Halifax Gibbet for example).

And all of this for entertainment purposes. Interesting.

I found it interesting as well, but every one of the "volunteers" did just that, they volunteered to put themselves in that situation knowing what they were getting into.

Plus, a paramedic was on-site and extreme caution was taken to ensure everyone's safety. I think it gave the sense of how awful the torture was. They were only in the device for a fraction of time of actual victims and were able to describe the experience to all of us watching the show. Just imagine multiplying that experience ten-fold. How horrible it must have been.

Besides, No one was forced to be a volunteer. I am sure if Chrissy (or anyone else for that matter) didn't want to get in the gibbet, no one would have made her. I think it shows the extreme degree of trust they have in each other.

It least this show is related to History unlike some of the other shows like Ax Men and Ice Road Truckers. This show a show can still be about history and entertaining at the same time. I hope this is the beginning of reversal in the current trend of History Channel Programming and we got more shows like Surviving History and less programming like Ice Road Truckers.

I don't have anything against IRT, but I don't tend to watch it very much.

I would like to thank everyone involved in the production of Surviving History. Every one from all of the sound men, producers, directors, editors and everyone in between you guys were awesome and incredibly tolerable to put up with all of the antics of the Scarefactory employees. (D-Day, seen you on second episode. I told you I would get you seen. tell your mom.)
I hope that we are lucky enough to see you all again. If not I wish you all the best of luck although you are all so talented you don't need my luck. Thanks for putting up with me..........

I've really enjoyed the series and hope it continues. Keep up the great work, Spooky D!

I have a question maybe someone can answer. Last night they built the 'Liars - ' something. It was like an octagonal device that a victim was strapped over with weights attached at the ankles. Anyone remember what it was called?

Are they going to update the website? The only thing that changes is this discussion blog. They haven't updated the episode previews or video or image postings.

I am really enjoying this groundbreaking and limb-breaking series. This is clearly a big step for THC and the production company Brainbox. I am delighted with the overwhelmingly positive reviews. The two professional historians we have seen so far clearly know their stuff but I wonder if they were ever given the opportunity of "cleaning up" some obvious gaffs made by the team members in some of their "factual claims." One has to admire their tremendous enthusiasm and always take into account the proviso that the objects they have made were never intended to exactly replicate originals. This is particularly so since the authorities are invariably unclear as to exactly how, when, where and even if all of these these devices were actually made and/or used. The point of the show seems to be that man has continuously invented and re-invented technology for purposes that have not always been morally permissible. Many of these devices have a long and frequently erroneous folk law associated with them but have become such a part of popular culture that there is considerable merit in exploring the physical and psychological effects of their actual and also possible historical uses. What one important outcome of the series should be is the recognition that the use of almost all of these objects of torture and execution is morally reprehensible and that we have an obligation to judge the societies that used them as morally corrupt. To merely label this excellent show as ghoulish or sick is to completely miss the point. We have obviously survived our history despite our frequent inhumanity but we really should reflect seriously on whether we will survive the history we are presently making for ourselves. We have created, used and continue to maintain the technology to completely destroy ourselves and our planet. Does this mean that the mentality of the ancient torturers and executioners is so entrenched we are prepared to willingly not survive the self-made and self-making history that is presenty far more heinous than that which we must so obviously condemn in our ancestors?

Spooky D is not Dave from the show. Nor do I ever have a desire to be.

Wow. Look at this show draw in a new audience of first time posters to the board!

I loved it! I've only seen part of one episode (Iron Maiden) and the episode with the Pillory, Branks Mask and Brazen Bull. It was great! I especially liked the men testing the things they make on themselves as volunteers. ]:)

I looked up future episodes and it says there's only 4. I hope that's incorrect. There better be more than 4 episodes of this show!

We'll never know about future episodes or anything else, because they never update the website- unless they are overtly trying to sell us something like i-tune downloads. I hope the series is a success, but History Channel certainly isn't helping with its web activities. It's pretty clear the only history that interests them is the history of their checkbook balances. If they were a bit more thoughtful about the future of those balances, they'd act differently in care & feeding of their potential viewers/fans.
