When they built the gallows, the animation they used was incorrect. The noose they used is distinctly Americanized and, when placed directly behind the neck as shown, will usually cause death by strangulation, even in a long drop.
To get the snapping of the neck on the C3-C4 vertebrae, the knot needs to be under the angle of the jaw, usually the left side. If you look at the video of Saddam's hanging, the noose is to the side. Also, in the US Army maunal, that is where the noose is to go.
If you look at the hanging of the Lincoln conspirators, only one appears to have the "neck snap" look.

Do not understand how you can say that the hanging of the gallows was Americanized when clearly in Europe we all know that alot of pictures of people that where hanged the not was always in the back. So I guess you can say that the hanging was Europeanized.
