Hello to all! The tunnel biz has been in my family for generations. My grandfather, father, husband, brothers, and nephews are all part of this last 100 plus year legacy; that brings NYC clean water and mass transit everyday. So in light of this I do become defensive about the negative comments I have seen posted I hope that all you history buffs have enough of an open mind to be able to watch and learn a history that has been beneath our feet for longer than you guys have been posting your backhanded comments.

To those of you that would understand....I am a Hostetter, and if it was appropriate, I would post a much more in depth and colorful response...

tshock- I'll learn as much about the "history" of Sandhogs by watching "SANDHOGS" as I would the "history" of the Ice Road if I wasted my time watching "ICE ROAD TRUCKERS"

This forum is going in circles like I predicted.

"Sandhogs"- Watch the show for entertainment, watch it because you like it and enjoy it. Watch it because you're from the area. Watch it because it's what you do for a living. Watch it because it's what somebody you know or are related to does for a living.

Watch it because you're in it, somebody you know is in it, somebody you're related to is in it. Watch it because it's what your family has done for years- but you don't have to try to justify that it's "history" just because it's on a channel named HISTORY.

There are similar shows on different occupations on DSC and TRUtv- these shows are not being pawned off as "history".

My oppinion of the show "Sandhogs" was formed when I viewed the first promo for it. You or NON-HISTORY is going to change that oppinion.

This is your forum- watch and enjoy the show, and then discuss it with other fans- don't waste your time trying to convince us non-viewers that it's "history"

Again, adios "sandhogs"- the stage is yours.

I've got a question- does anyone know the cost of a mole? I tried to find it, with no luck. It's GOT to be expensive!

I am not a sandhog but I am a very lucky guy who got to spend a day working in Tunnel #3. I've been in some pretty wild places, but I can confidently say that no matter what else I may ever do, that one day will always be the most incredible experience of my life. I couldn't begin to comprehend the size of this operation before I saw it with my own eyes. And despite the rough environment and the danger, yes, I can see why these guys love their job. I'd go back down in a heartbeat!

I've been a history buff for 20 years, and, while you might say the History Channel is trying to make programs people will watch, remember that they started with -history- and have to compete with the rest of the networks. Which is better, an edited version of what sandhogs are doing, or truckers, or anyone, or NO knowledge of their existence at all? The History Channel has done many programs about older sandhog works, including the Brooklyn Bridge, and TVA works, and other historical, deadly construction projects. Who cares who directs it, some knowledge is better than none.

If people develop interest, they'll get online and learn more, or learn the truth, or whatever. Don't color the work these guys do by saying some TV show about them isn't 100% accurate. What show, what credit, what proof of their work existed before? 100 years from now, the evidence of their work will come from the footage from this show.

These guys do dangerous work. Viewers, intelligent ones, can respect that, and know that TV is edited. Give the people credit, the workers. I came here simply to tell Morgan that I appreciated the positive reinforcement he gave his guys for the work they did. Not many bosses compliment their employees, and he impressed me. Then I see people on this forum saying that footage of these guys working, however edited, isn't a good thing? Like I can't tell that a guy 800 ft below ground working with dynamite is putting his life at risk? C'mon. These guys are being made famous, and if you have actually watched the History Channel for 10 years, you'd have seen that they have covered sandhogs extensively in the past -- yes, the guys who built the Brooklyn Bridge.

Don't criticize the History Channel, then go back and watch UFC or something on Spike and feel like they are doing a better service. As someone said, this is history in the making. All respect for these guys, and IRT, and Ax Men, and every Civil War soldier, and every other person that has been featured on the HC. People who helped make the world we live in what it is. My job isn't unionized, but thanks to Local 147. Remember, however, if it wasn't for this show, and then this forum, no one would have heard of you.

Sovietcollector, all the history most people had before this show was a highschool textbook. I don't know about your school, but my textbook, if it mentioned sandhogs at all, might have had a paragraph. So, maybe a paragraph I don't remember, or a TV show that interested me enough that I watched it and took the time to type the Wall of Text you see above? Maybe you're right, I guess the HC isn't doing anything to promote awareness of dangerous, pioneering and important jobs people are doing. I'll go back to My Name is Earl for knowledge about the country I live in.

Edit: Not to mention, after watching the premiere a second time, Re-Pete's words at the end... Color doesn't matter... "We are brothers..." How can that not be a good thing, moving into the 21st century?

Saw the show last night and loved it! Having grown up in Manhattan, I'd heard of the Sandhogs and unfortunately, they usually got in the papers when someone was killed in an underground accident. Last night's show was extremely interesting and the characters that are being highlighted are just as interesting.

My kudos to the Sandhogs for the very dangerous, yet necessary, jobs they do for the people of NYC!

Ive been a NYC Sandhog for going on 28 years. The work is dangerous and tiring, but also rewarding in the knowledge that most people will never see what you have seen.
You have the chance to stand where none have stood before, see what none have seen before and also be the last to see it before its hidden from view forever.
The bonds developed working in this buisness are strong and run deep. There are different little "clicks" but all in all we stick together as one.The fact of the conditions are as such is what brings the whole bunch into something more that a common work relationship.
We laugh together, sweat together and also feel the pain when it hits a fellow Sandhog. We may sometimes fight among ourselves but we will stand up to any outsider as one. That goes from the top all the way to the bottom rung. You may not always care for the other guy,but you know he has walked in your boots, and that carries a lot of weight.
As for those who complain about the series not teaching history...ask yourselves this:If it were not for shows such as this, bringing in advertising dollars and viewers, would there even be a History Channel?

Sandhog147- Because of programs like this there is no more HISTORY channel- it died two over two years ago.

If the new management had remained true to itself and not sell out to "market surveys" that say viewers like these real life dramas- yes there would still be a HISTORY channel.

THC had a strong core audience made up of long time viewers, who spent the majority of their TV viewing time, their tuner glued to THC, watching the many fine "history" programs that THC was created for.

As far as advertisers- they are slime- they don't care what program they put their annoying commercials on- if there was "WATCHING THE PAINT DRY SHOW"- you can bet there would be advertising dollars spent on it.

just to clarify, the ESA is running from Long Island City to Grand Central, adding two new platform levels in that noble station. Will connect LIRR riders to the East Side.

thx for the good thoughts too ;)

Just a bit of info.I work on some of the job sites they filmed on ,we were told this would be on the Discovery Channel. How did it get to the History Channel I don't know. But as I watched them filming I knew that they were not looking to see the real sandhogs. And tell their stories..
But just watch and see how they work and be glad someone has the balls to do the work they do. I'm going to watch because I know these guys and support them all the way. Its hard work and dangerous so just support them and don't believe half you will see on this program.

Last nite's show was or should I say is all about history. Hard working fella's doing an honest day's work that no one really knew was going on. Yet they all took pride.
They could all probably teach the world a thing or two about what goes on under foot. Especially that handsome Morgan, yum!!! Let's just say this lady will watch again and again!!

Sandhogs are craaaazy party animals. But besides that, they are some of the bravest men and WOMAN (yeah there are some chicks in there as I recall) in New York. They dig the tunnels for the Subway, the Aqueducts for NYC water supply (they filmed Die Hard 3's tunnel sequence in one of them), and the foundations on the Brooklyn Bridge.

I also want to give a shout out to my Dad Marty Slattery, and to all the boys from Rockaway working your butts off. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now let's see if this show on the HC show gets you guys the respect you deserve from everyone in the world. The work you guys do will last so far beyond all of us. You must be so proud. You should be.

(Local 147 what's up !!!!!???!!!!! )
