Don't waste your time trying to get these guys to change their minds.
They have their minds made up regardless of anything they might see or anything you might try to show them.
They are on a mission. because they don't think anything other than their brand of history belongs on "History" It's nothing really personal about Sandhogs because they don't know anything about them or Ax Men or Ice Road Truckers and don't really care to know. It's just that they want history shown their way. That's life. You can't always have what you want.

I for one having had an interest in the Brooklyn Bridge and other structures, and engineering marvels will be watching.
Those guys will be around after the series 'Sandhogs is over and done with. as long as this type of show is around they'll be here complaining

There is nothing against the professions it is just the fact, Ax Men and IRT have been presented as Reality shows with added contests. Footage on IRT has been shown out of order, to tell the story Thom Beers wants. It is this manipulation of the most basic facts that are the reason these shows do not belong on History. For Sandhogs I will hold my judgement. But and new Thom Beers show I will already have prejudged as he has done the same deadly job, with a contest series over and over with different professions on different channels.

I am hopeful that people will change their minds after watching the new series and that they will be able to see that how something began is history, how it continues will be history. Sandhogging isn't something new. It just hasn't been spoken of much other than some reports and projects here and there, I think in part due to the nature of the tight band of family & friends that work the industry. History is real, quite frankly I enjoy watching the channel as it shows above and beyond what we have already learned in the highschool books. Gives us glimpses into areas that are interesting, showing us the roots of how specific industries, specialty jobs were born.

I've grown up my whole life around sandhogs. They risk there lives everyday to improve the infrastructure in NYC. It is an unbelievably close knit family. They all rally for their own whenever anything happens. I'm proud to say that my father and his friends are sandhogs and I don't mind explaining it to those who don't have a clue what that means. It is one of the hardest unions in the country to get into. These men do incredible work building water tunnels, bridges, etc...if its deeper than 6ft you know a sandhog did the work.
Why don't you morons who obivously know nothing about what these brave men do, shut up and watch. I like to see you go down into a tunnel everyday for miles and be able to do what they do. I bet you can't!

Just to set the record straight there are other men working in the tunnels known as Operating Engineers. Also facing the same dangers and working under the same conditions, they are involved in the mining and construction of the tunnel.

Hi everyone,

I normally just lurk on the boards but this topic prompted me to create an account to put something out there. Part of the inspiration for this show came from a book several years back called Payback by Thomas Kelly. It's about two feuding brothers--one's an Irish mobster, the other is a future law school student bent on getting out of the 'hood--and their struggles with each other, their community values, and the mob. The book was pretty successful and I thought it was really good: informative about the development craze in New York of the 80s while also telling an evocative story with great characters, all with a gritty/noir bent. (If you're interested in social history of the time the book's also pretty insightful.)

It was largely responsible for putting sandhogs in the public eye and gives a very personal account of these people's lives. I think it's out of print now but has been reissued by a different publisher under the title Sandhogs. If you want to check it out here's the link.

Your friendly neighborhood history book nerd,
Tom

Hello NY History Reader-

I just finished reading Payback and would certainly agree- it's a good read! I love anything written (or filmed) about NYC and I've already bought Thomas Kelly's two other books: The Rackets and Empire Rising. Am anxiously awaiting his next one.

Can't wait to watch the premiere of The Sandhogs tomorrow evening! It's showing us a piece of New York's real estate that we don't ever get to see and the men who love working in those tunnels!

If you knew the history of the Sandhog you would not be saying stuff like this because It all started out as a family of miners and was built in to what it is today and without these guys you would not have the water you need nor the subway tunnels we have today.

We don't know the History because HC is not going to show it. Instead this is just another reality show wtthout the historical content.
