Calling All sandhogs (tell them what it is like to be down there)

My husband is a sandhog he works on the 3rd avenue subway tunnel. He does not even want me to watch the documentary because he said he does not want me to see the dangers that you guys face everyday. When he comes home he is dead bone tired. And he gets up every morning a goes back to work and say he loves his job thats what makes a sandhog. He started out as a shaper on the graveyard shift that was the worst of it all because by the time he got home I was already at work I would have to call home or come home at lunch to see if he had gotten home, The night shift was the hardest on the family. People dont realize what you guys go thu every day. They have no clue unless they live it for themselves

Mitchflipped- Please realize that I can only begin to imagine what a hard, back breaking, dangerous job being a "Sandhog" is. Likewise to being an AX MEN or an ICE ROAD TRUCKER. But a channel that proclaims itself to be "HISTORY" is not the proper forum to tell me about the on the job life of these professions. The programs are better suited for channels like TLC, DSC, or SPIKE- even A&E would be more suitable.

And as for all you people that dont believe this is history then you dont know what you are talking about becuase first of all the filtration system that they are blasting and mining is one of our most important resourses for fresh water as well as this is the first subway extension that has been made in 20 years or so. So that is history on how it is done now verses 20 years ago etc.

I am very disappointed with the history channel?s depiction of a trade that served and supported my family well. Sandhogs do not bloviate as that young hog did on your show. It was embarrassing watching him. Now that your series wants to dramatize the work of sandhogs, it would have been nice to give the history of the hogs and put on some old timers that could lay out the story for you. Instead you choose a boisterous youngster that doesn?t have a clue to what it takes to be a great sandhog. Tunnels flooded, people were crushed by train cars when the waters subsided, and through all of that, Sandhogs were helping each other out of the hole to safety. There were tunnels that were so dangerous with sand instead of rock, that it engulfed many Sandhogs, to their deaths. The company wanted the hogs to go back to work, the men wouldn?t, in respect to the death of their brethren. It wasn?t until the company promised to pay the widow the extra money it would cost for the job to close for that day, did the hogs go back to work. These are the men that can give testimony to what it takes to be a Sandhog.

I totaly agree with you I wish they would show what they really do and the men that work as Hogs. The men don't want to seen on camera they just want to get the work done and get home safe.

Amen to you. When my husband was approached to be interviewed he asked for a verbal assurance from the History Channel that they would not mitigate the importance of the work these men do; or single him out as being any more experienced than the next. These are truly unique men working in the tunnels that are very proud of their "Local" brothers. I can't think of any other profession that the men respect each other as equals no matter what.

The sandhogs can be depicted in an honorable way as did National Geographic did in 1993. The title was Water Blasters. The history of upstate New York and urban New York City was great. The extension of that would be the history of the men called Sandhogs and their union.

This was a wasted chance to leave a legacy to the children of sandhogs. The men who know the history will not speak up easily. It would take talent to get the men who count to open up and tell the story. Only a true documentary film maker would take the time, ease the men of their fear of being embarrassed, and get the story documented on film for posterity.

I have to agree with you the show is a wasted opportuntity. Where it the history that the sandhogs started out as a family of miners or the major projects they did. What we needed was a show on the general history of the sandhogs. Shows on the subway, Brooklyn Bridge do not count, as the sounds hogs are a part of it, but not the only part.

sandhogwife- you have to remember the producers of these shows are not documentarians or historians- it is not their goal to present the "HISTORY" or tradition of any profession. They are pure "Hollywood", their goal being the presentation of "HIS-STORY" in the most dramatic way they can for the entertainment and enjoyment of the viewer, spending as little time and money that they can in it's production.

If that is the case, then Richie Fitzsimmons should be ashamed of himself for allowing this producer to use these men for his own dubious means. A union leader is supposed to protect his men. Instead, Richie used this show to promote himself at the expense of the sandhogs. If this is how the series will continue, I don?t think there will be very many happy sandhogs.

I imagine there are a few unhappy loggers, truck drivers, crab fishers and oil well drillers out there too.
