Blasting delay

Why is there such a long delay between the detonators going off and the actual blast?

Blasting Delays: The delay is timing for all the caps. The signal goes all the way around the shot, before the actual blast takes place. So each cap receives a signal when all caps have received this signal the first hole goes off and each timed hole follows from there. (My sandhog husband dictated this to me! Hope it answers your question)

Thanks for the reply. Do you use a computer program to set the timing on all the caps?

I don't have an answer for that yet, my husband isn't home yet.

I will tell you what my son explained last night. The way the delay was done for the show is they film it in high speed which gives a very clear picture, and then they can slow the video for effect on the TV. I do not know if this is what happened, but I do know that the blast goes off so fast you don't know there is a delay from the time the hammer is dropped to the time it is done. It all happens in just seconds.

Aha! That explains why there seems to be such a long delay. It's really a slow motion replay of the blast sequence.
Thanks again.

No, a computer isn't used. All the holes are set off at 42 ms apart.

My understanding is that the blast shown on TV is in real time.

To answer your question,

No computers are used when setting the explosives. The way the caps are designed are what allows the each hole to be set off at a different interval. The reason why there are delays in place are because of the way we want the rock to fall when we blast. By putting in the delays we can control how the rock falls after a shot which in most cases helps with mucking operations.

The only time computers are used in the drilling and shooting operations are when drill patterns are designed by the engineers and input into the drill itself.

My original question was related to how the blast sequence appears on the TV show. It seems like there is a considerable delay between the time that all the caps go off and the actual blast. Is this because of how the video was edited for the show or is this an accurate depiction of the events?

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry for the long delay in response (no pun intended)

I personally have never experienced a blast where the the delay between the caps going off (popping noises) and the main explosion was any more than 3-4 seconds. I think the show does it to build anticipation.
