ANTHONY'S OUTBURST: RESPECT THE COFFEE BREAK

Oct 4, 2008 12:03 PM
I'm not a sand hog, but live near the filtration plant they are building in Van Cortlandt park. I have two questions I'd like to pose for any sandhogs in this group. 1) Anthony's last outburst regarding the coffee breaks, Re-Pete, the Forman mentioned a pioneer sand hog who fought for the right for the workers to get two 15 minute coffee breaks. Who was this man and is it true that the Sandhogs were not allowed these breaks before. As for Anthony, I felt that his ego couldn't handle not being the man in charge. Right on to Curran for demoting him. 2)If a sandhog walks off the job, dissappearing without informing his supervisor, would this be grounds for a suspension/termination?

I would think that yes the outburst would be grounds for automatic dismissal as is fighting down in the tunnel. there is too much danger down there for the formen and the walking bosses to worry about the fighting and petty crap. like that someone can serously get hurt. Safety is of the utmost importance down there and that everyone get along and work hand in hand because of the dangers. my husband is a sandhog and thats the way I undertsand it from him. Crap like that is not tolorated. As for the coffee breaks Everyone needs a break down there they have a long hard day everyday some days are harder than others. My thought on the deal with Anthony is that he was just too young and inexperienced to be able to handle the foremans position. He needs a little more respect and needs to work more with his fellow workers then to give himself a name by getting 40 feet in one day. by pushing these men like that there is room for mistakes and thats the way accidents happen.

;) I think Morgan should call his old buddies in Boston, Quincy and Hull to come work. They would love to!!!!! The old boys would get it done, along with the old boys from NY. Now that would make history! Guys from both places doing what they do best and getting the work done without drama queens!!! How's that for television ratings?

;) Morgan would have had many capable guys to choose from to be the shifter and they would never even have thought to treat the guys that way. It's a wonder Anthony's hardhat could fit on his head after Morgan told him the good news that he was in charge! He forgot all about what his momma taught him about manners and respect, which should have been fresh in his memory because he is what - 10?

The whole deal with Boston gets old after a few weeks.
First off,Boston "Sandhogs" are a misnomer as the phrase was coined in NY during the building of the Brooklyn bridge.
Second,it seems like Morgan(with all due respect) has become the figure head of the Sandhog series. We were doing tunnels when he came here and we will be doing them when he leaves.
I do sometimes shake my head at the things Ive seen on the show.To say that a blast diagram is figured out on a napkin in the hog house and that Blasting is unpredictable and every shot different is a discredit to miners everywhere.I dont choose to be followed around constantly by a camera crew filming every step.We are here to do a job,not act in a series. This is one reason that many real Sandhogs feel that the series is a joke.

I hope that the series isnt canceled like I had heard rumored. The people filmed in the first episodes are NOT a realistic portrayal of most Sandhogs. The whole hip hop lifestyle Anthony portrays in the series is the reason he is where he is.WE ARENT LIKE THAT.He IMHO is a discredit to the Sandhogs, but it must make a good series.

I don't think for a minute that all sandhogs are like Anthony. He seemed to be one jerk. Look at him when they take their coffee break. They are all enjoying themselves, he's in a corner by himself concerned about the half out wasted on both breaks because he feels that its a half out less working. They should promote him to mgmt. instead.

He is just a kid trying to prove himself. I understand that breaks are important so how about you all give one to Anthony.Do any of you know him ?Mabye there is a reason he seems standoffish the show only shows bits and peices of what happens. I do not know himbut he looks like a doll tome.

I think every one needs to give Anthony a brake he's just trying to get the job done and for the record not all sandhogs get a coffee break all the time. Definitely don't get fired for it. There are plenty off times Sandhogs work through coffee that's why I don't get what the big deal is. He is a young man that came into this business with no family and friends in the union. He earned and proved himself. Like in the last comment they do not show everything that he and his team are doing down there. I feel there was a lot of jelousy going on with the fact that he became foreman in only 2 years the fact that the camera favored him and the fact that he is only 25. Anthony has proving himself and definitely has made a name for himself. I'm sure that all you people that keep judging a person you don't even know could not ever do what he does for a living. I am sure that these discussions are rolling off his back because he is very talented and none of you are going to stop him from being a SANDHOG. Give him credit for doing the job that he does at such a young age. These old timers are not going to last forever so lets give the young generation the opportunity to become successful men for Local 147.

I do understand your point, but you have to understand ours......
When you step in front of that camera, you represent all Sandhogs. Those who came before you and those who will come after you.We knew that the attitude would get him into trouble and it did.Instead of trying to keep a low profile and make a realistic representation of his fellow workers,he went the hip hop "Im the coolest" route and it didnt work.
It was a hard lesson to be learned and I hope it dosent need to be taught more than once.

I don't recall that Anthony was fired, only demoted from his position as crew boss. He could have come back to the job. Of course, why would he want to work with the same people who used to be his crew.

If they decided to work through a coffee break I would think everybody would have to agree upon it.

Anthony let his promotion go to his head. He wasn't in his position long enough to demand that the guys do something he probably wouldn't do if the shoe was on the other foot.

Newer people in unions often don't know the history and how hard fought these "little" things like coffee breaks were. Even belonging to a union could get you hurt or worse.

All he could think of was getting the footage he wanted so he could outdo someone else's record.

We all know what often happens when people get in a big hurry....mistakes are made and people sometimes get hurt.

You know a lot of people don't think or care that how they act can influence how others see the whole group. It never enters their mind that they are representing anyone, but themselves.

?:| Hey Sandhog147, you need to chill out..........

Fine and dandy if the term "Sandhog" was invented in New York. All words are invented somewhere, does that mean they are never used again by people other than the inventors?

This site is for people to state their opinions, correct?

To answer everyones questions about termination, yes he would be ran off the job. And the breaks are given with a purpose, safety first.Worked in deep tunnel in Chicago many moons ago,its a hard job,you no work you no have job, simple.

I think the problem with people refering to these men as "sandhogs" is deceiving. It's ok to use the label but my dad is NOT a sandhog. He's been in this exact line of work since 1966 and has always refered to himself as a miner. All they were trying to say is that you shouldn't assume that this is what all men who do this line of work like to be called. It works in this context but not all miners are sandhogs. In fact, as I understand it, Sandhogs refer to the union the miners are members of in New York. I could be wrong about that though.

exshifterswife,
You need to chill out.In NYC there is a baseball team called the "Yankees".
They play baseball in Baltimore also, are they Yankees too?
There are miners the world over, and are called as such.Sandhogs are in NYC where the phrase was coined.
