Was the USS Franklin present during the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor? One source claims that it was, however, another claims that the carrier was not commissioned until mid-WWII. My grandfather served on the Franklin in the Pacific as a Navy Sea-bee, and I'm curious about the history of the Franklin.

Thankfully, they were all at sea. The USS Franklin didn't hit the waves until 1943, well after the day of infamy. She's an interesting ship. The Franklin supposedly was the most heavily damaged US ship in WWII that actually sailed back to the US on her own power. -- "I intend to smite the wicked not save the heathen." -Amos Dundee ("Major Dundee") "Ninjas killed my family. A friend of mine was a gunnery officer on Franklin from commissioning through her return to New York Harbor two weeks after the end of the war, so I have a great interest in her, too. The following is an article written by a current poster on the WWII forum some time ago. It will provide you with a good background of what happened to her in her final battle: http://www.thehistorynet.com/wwii/blfranklin/ The following is a page on the Frankln website which lists crew awards. http://www.ussfranklin.org/crewman.htm You will probably find your grandfather's name. My friend's name is there. Tom
