Racist is the notion that an all-white jury was incapable of rendering an honest verdict in a trial of a Japanese-American. Even if the verdict were the result of bigotry, how in the world would you set out to prove that now? Iva Ikuko Toguri was charged with eight separate counts of treason but convicted of only one, a fact that militates against the entire unfair-trial thesis. Toguri was convicted because of the false testimony of two of her superiors, both Japanese-Americans. It's as simple as that.

You just have to understand the enormity of the hatred towards the Japanese (and Japanese Americans) during and after WW2. It's impossible to factor it out. Nearly every family in America lost someone or knew someone who died in the war. Look at WW2 propoganda posters and it will give you a sense. The japanese are completely depicted as subhuman and even ratlike. Check it out on google. Search for ww2 japanese propoganda. Message was edited by historychanneladdicts at May 19, 2005 7:54 PM

Schnazola has it correct. It is not only racist but ignorant to think that just because the jury was all white, that Iva did not get a fair trial. She went to jail because her two bosses lied on the stand. The nation needed a scapegoat and it is remarkable that she was only found guilty of one of the charges, when, as others have mentioned, Japan was so hated and so many people had lost somebody that they knew. Here is the closest to the real story I have seen so far... http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mmtokyorose.html
