The 2009 Ashes Tour

Jun 5, 2009 10:22 PM
American sporting fans will be breathlessly awaiting news of this event looked forward to by better than a billion people.

This is an event that puts such minor sports as gridiron, basketball, ice hockey, and baseball into the shade. Olympics and World Championships are of no consequence, let alone "World Series".

I refer of course as you will all know, to the Australian 'Ashes Tour' of England, known by all as "the old enemy". "the Poms, and more correctly, the Marlybone Cricket Club!

This event, again as all Americans will know, comes around about every 3 years, and Australia usually hands out a hiding to the hapless inventors of the game, but not the master of it.

Long gone are the glory days of a certain unconvicted convict called Ian Bothom, scourge of Australia, whose ancestors escaped transportation by the quick tactic of dancing at the and of a rope at Pentonville. ALL Australians wish he had done the same!

I shall post results to all American fans as they come through., beginning at the First Test on 8th July. I expect a 5 nil white-wash.

"He's OUT!"

John,

For my heart's sake I hope it is not as nail biting as the 2005 Ashes, you remember when England just breat the Aussies ;)

Someone somewhere on the "Sports History" said that baseball was the most skillful game because it was difficult to hit a curved ball.

I was going to tell him that cricket has the ball doing a dozen different movements.

John Pauk Getty the American oil tycoon said that Cricket is the greatest game ever invented. He should have added that it needs the greatest amount of skill.

Not at all, complete rubbish. You know the weather will save us on at least one occasion.

I'll be optimistic and go for 3-1 to Australia.

Hopefully Ricky Ponting wont have the sense of humour failures he had in 2005

Rob,

You will have noticed the result of the recent 20/20 match against the Windies.

This is yet another clever Australian tactic to improve the odds, hopefully from odds on, to odds against.

We expect to make a KILLING!!!

I was most surprised by Australia, but then after Eng V Netherlands I am willing to believe anything.

Most surprised by the batting effort Pakistan put out today. They didn't look at the races really. Nice to see Broad didn't let Friday get to him.

Problem is, I don't see Australia playing badly for an entire series :(

Rob,

One of the fascinating things about Cricket is its unpredictability as to 'form'.

A match of any sort can change in 10 minutes of Cricket governed by a couple of 'snicks' of 2mm off the side of a bat. A gust of wind whilst the ball is in flight at any time can alter a stroke or a catch by that same 2mm.

I wonder how our American Cricket fanatics would view the custom of clapping a fine stroke or catch by the opposing side?

..........Betting against Pakistan or India is not a good idea either.

Rob,

Australia's fiendish plan is working well.

We have managed to get the odds out from 10/1 on to 20/1 against, and we are working on at least double that. By the time the first County match is played and lost we will be at least 50/1, and then we will pounce.

The Australian Federal Treasury will be awash in GBPs.

John,

The Ist Test,

Another thriller, a carbon copy of the Manchester Test in 05, although the other way round this time.

Australia dominated throughout. England need needed to bat all day, of 100 over s with 8 wickets standing on the last day. Only the weather could save England.

Wicket after English wicket fell to the Aussies. It was all over I thought. 70 for 5 with 50 over to go. You would not be able to get odds against England saving the match.

But The English tail wagged and the last pair ( not very good batsmen) lasted 40 minutes and 12 overs in an heroic last stand, the match was still in doubt going down to the last ball and the last minute.

England had done it they had saved the match. This last pair withstood everthing the Aussies could throw at them. shades of Henry Newbolt's 'Vitae Lampata', although England did not "Play Up, Play up, and Play the Game", according to Ricki Ponting.
He accuses England of gamesmanship and not playing to the spirit of the game.

What's this John, Aussies whingeing? Surely not.

"IT'S JUST NOT CRICKET!!!!"

Full marks to the tailenders, they fought well to the end and deserved the result.

NIL marks to the English captain. Deliberate, unjustified, time-wasting is against the Rules and the spirit of the game.

Americans can never understand a sport, more like a 5 day war of tactics and mixed fortunes, can be so fascinating!

As a hopeless player, i have loved it for 60 years.

John your spin bowler (can't spell is name, )said they would have done the same and in any case Australia had used up all the overs available.

Big stuff over here, what with Pieterson and Johnson squaring up to each other. Who said cricket was a game for gentlemen, never has been. Remember "Body Line" and Chapple bowling underhand to the Kiwis? All good stuff

Angus,

Well done England, first victory at Lords since 1934.

A final result well deserved by BOTH sides.

Just sat watching the highlights. Been a cracking contest so far although it's fair to say there's been a couple of shocking decisions as well.

Hope the rest of the series can provide this level of entertainment.

I might as well up date this topic

The result of the 2009 Ashes Series was that England regained the Ashes from Australia in a 5 match series, winning 2 matches, losing 1 and drawing 2.

Angus,

A result well deserved by both sides!

Fortunately, we have just re-introduced public executions, and Mr R Ponting will be the first televised Australia wide.

Public opinion tends to the good old English custom of being hung, drawn & quartered, but I prefer the '1000 cuts' method myself.
