Why do I feel like someone's reading my mind. I just love your name, like a bell in a valley. -- Catchin da day, if I could. 'mud

What is on your mind? I had to look it up. I doubt that I am, but I have said in the past that I feel like a barometer of devastating events. I have many times gotten sick before a coming disaster. I got particularly sick in the week or so prior to 9/11. I am not sure that that is the same as a highly sensitive empathetic person though. -- Inspirations: Eric Hoffer, Buckminster Fuller, Robert Pirsig, Leonardo da Vinci, Jesus, Francis Bacon, Max Ehrmann, Michael Harrington, J. Hello, Sojo! So good to find you still on here. Seems the boards have...changed quite a bit in the two years I've been away. Nothing is necesarily on my mind, but I stumbled across this online and found it very interesting. I remember one time Lakota had suggested to another poster on here that she may be an empath. I find it intriguing that some people feel they have the ability to feel others emotional and physical pain. Just wondered if anyone had any first-hand experience. And, from what I've read, you could be, with your physical symptoms. From what I understand, some empaths are more gifted at "blocking" than others. I may also be, but I truly lack empathy (or patience) for the majority of adult humanity. I empathize with animals, children, and the developmentally disabled more than most adults (who I find, for the most part, to be completely self-centered and self-serving in regards to almost every aspect of their life). So how are you doing? dharma

Tellurian, I'm referring to people who believe they can actually feel either the physical and/or emotional pain of another. I know you're a grand skeptic, so I'm interested in your take on this topic... dharma

I have read a little on it. Done a little research (nothing in depth, mind you). I've come to the conclusion that most of them are people who may have some natural gifts at intuitively understanding the mood of another through non-verbal communication, but I find most of it a little far out there for me. For example, I'm especially good at reading people (my B.S. meter comes in handy when dealing with employees), but I certainly don't pretend like I can feel another's pain or KNOW their thougths. However, sometimes I do feel the confusion and hurt of animals. Most people...well, I honestly find that when I try to see/feel from their point of view, I usually end up disappointed by the selfishness they're operating from. However, before I wrote it off completely as mumbo jumbo, just wanted to hop on here and ask people with perhaps more knowledge/experience than myself. Thanks!

Interesting article. Brain research fascinates me. Our minds are miraculous machines. If only we could access their full potential...maybe this world would be a better place. As for animals, it's not just with animals I know. I think I just feel a lot more sympathy and compassion for animals than I do for most humans. The majority of humanity I deal with on a daily basis generally makes me want to hole up in a cave.

Growing up my mother would say that she knew when she was pregant, and this happened many times, she would know because dad would suffer morning sickness. They didn't have test kits back then and mom didn't suffer much morning sickness herself. -- Inspirations: Eric Hoffer, Buckminster Fuller, Robert Pirsig, Leonardo da Vinci, Jesus, Francis Bacon, Max Ehrmann, Michael Harrington, J. Empathy holds a wide range of meanings, anything from being able to sympathize with another and recognize the fact that they're upset, to actual physical/emotional symptoms on any level. We feel what you feel, whether you actually believe that or not. We put ourselves into your shoes, your situation, your train of thought and temporarily except it as our own, sometimes this is voluntary, most of the time it just happens. We know when those close to us are upset even without any communication what-so-ever. I've often woken up i the night feeling sick to my stomach with no rational explanation why, only to call my girlfriend and find out she was upset about something. I can't sleep if someone's upset with me, even if I don't know they are. Whether by choice or not, Empaths experience the emotions of those around them and are usually good at cheering other people up or at least helping them work through their problems. Sometimes if you're hurt we'll literally take some of the pain off your shoulders so you can make it through the day. ~An Empath

I wonder if this can be related, in the sense that all is one: Matthew 25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did [it] not to one of the least of these, ye did [it] not to me. -- Inspirations: Eric Hoffer, Buckminster Fuller, Robert Pirsig, Leonardo da Vinci, Jesus, Francis Bacon, Max Ehrmann, Michael Harrington, J.
