What Went Down, Pearl Harbor

I really like the show in the way it tried to capture what actually happened that day. I wish they would take all their research and 90% of the graphical work and depict the whole day and not just the sinking of the Arizona. Creating a historically correct movie while survivors are still around would benefit history buffs and students alike. In high school I watched Tora Tora Tora, I know you can do better.

it was very a interesting show... if they are trying to show this from the bomber's perspective, they why does the bomb drop straight down on the Arizona ? the plane is flying forward and drops the bomb well before it goes over top of the ship...

Shockingly full of booboos. . . here is my list of errors 1. The Japanese Type 99 No.80 Mark 5 AP Bomb was dropped from 10480 feet not 9800feet 2.Bomb strike angle was 12 degree not straight down at zero degrees 3. No proof of actual bomb detonation. . . hot kinetic sparks and flash had a better chance set off te first powder cans 4. Bomb Fin breaks away as it passed through top deck and should not be intact after entry - 5 decks (not 2 or 3) 5. Arming spindles for the twin tail fuses twist and pull out soon after the bomb is released and are not there as the bomb falls closer to the Arizona 6. Impact points are totally off - Point bomb hit first - not third as depicted in the show. The inside left & Inside right bombs strike next followed by outside left and outside right bombs striking last. The inside left bomb hit the Arizona and inside right bomb struck the outboard USS Vestal. The point bomb landed in between the Arizona and Vestal. 7. The "V" impact patterns was not depicted well 8. The timing between the first hit on turret 4 and the later fstal foecastle hit was probably closer to a minute not two minutes - read Ramapo's log - what was thought to be torpedo hits (1 minute apart) 9. Magazine did not explode instantly as depicted - he deep magazine rooms boiled with hot expanding gases for apporx. 6-8 seconds before the outward explosion became visible That is my nine cents worth of comments. . . .

In addition to the detailed errors listed here, I found a single glaring flaw in that they got the bomb wrong. My understanding is that instead of using an armor-piercing aerial bomb, the IJN adapted a 16.1" naval gun shell and fitted it with an aerodynamic rear section with stabilizing fins. When dropped from altitude, this would have the same penetrating effect of "plunging-fire" as when the shell was fired from a battleship guns. Ironically, similar naval shells were depicted in the magazine room where the bomb explodes. In general programs likes this suffer from a lack of cross-discipline expert; the computer guys were totally dependent on the historians with no knowledge of the basic story-line (ref: leaving out USS Nevada, then claiming it was "already sunk"? )

It was indeed a converted 410 mm naval shell.

What happened to my earlier post with the list of nine (9) errors within this movie?

There is a sudden silence on this site about this show. When is the next showing? I have a number of friends that would like to see the show in detail.

I thought the show was entertaining. Facts might be off, but my students actually enjoyed a show on History for once and it got them talking.
