Ice Road Truckers

I have to ask what does this have to do with history. This sounds more like something you find along the lines of discovery channel's deadlist catch. This sounds like nothing more than just run of the mill reality tv. Why can't the history channel if it insists on doing reality tv do something like 1940's house which was shown on PBS. This would make more since and it would fit in with the history theme that this channel is supposed be. The promotion for he Ice Road Truckers makes is seem like another crappy reality series. The story of six truckers who drive 18-wheelers on Canada’s ice roads is not really history, heck why not do a series that chronicles what our soldiers are doing in the field. Between canceling mail call and the airing of this Ice Road Truckers series. Chronicling two months of the ice truckers’ lives, is something you would find in realty tv. This gimmick has been done to death and as I said is something you would find on the discovery channel. But than maybe that is the plan to compete against discovery. Well if that is the case drop the history name so no one is fooled. When I turn on the history channel I expect shows about history, not UFO's and Reality TV like Ice Road Truckers.

And I remember when MTV had music. Then they put that on MTV2. Now it's nowhere. And "The Learning Channel" ...well that joke writes itself.

and I remember when the Scifi Channel showed Scifi, Horror and Fantasy shows. Now it shows wrestling. Then there was Tech TV which seems to now be Spike TV 2. History Channel was the last holdout. I guess now all we are going to see on the TV is Reality Shows and other trash.

I completely agree sovietcollector. As a matter of fact, this is why I joined the message board. Not to start trouble, but in an effort to let HC know in some small way that they are not showing HISTORY! I don't understand what Ice Road Truckers, UFOs, the Universe, Star Wars Technology, and the like. These are programs for the Science Channel, Discovery Channel, and The Learning Channel.
Ok, my argument is this...Surely, one would think that HC would have plenty to show being that their subject matter is everything that has ever happened since the dawn of time! I really don't understand...must be a money/ratings thing...who knows?

I have to say, I hate ice road truckers. It seems like its always on and its such worthless tv. Granted the ice road is maybe worth learning about considering the fact that sometimes human life is sacrificed, but there is nothing intellectual about this show at all.

Its a worrisome trend, if you ask me. There isn't much on tv anymore from which people can learn anything. The history channel was really the last hold out. At least you can learn something from shows like lock and load or the universe. There isn't anything to be learned from ice road truckers.

In terms of reality tv, which is a genre that has potential but has only produced entirely useless garbage, ice road truckers follows the same veign that every other reality show does. The main aspect of the show seems to be over dramatizing average crap that is really no big deal.

At best the ice roads are worth a history channel special explaining how they got there and why. Let's get back to learning something and please please please don't bring this slop back next season.

Well, The Universe does cover history, as far back as the "dawn of time" --farther than any of the other history shows, actually. I can see what you mean though, with episodes like "Sex in Space." From a historical perspective, that would be a very short episode:

"There hasn't been any" -NASA...The End.

The series still has more of a historical context than Ice Road Truckers or Ax Men (the latter of which has a great opportunity to explore the history of logging, which is extensive, but opts to focus on swear words and near amputations instead).

I remember in the earlier days of TLC and TDC and the like, the "educational networks," a lot of content was imported from the UK. The Science Channel's best shows often still are. I think if we can't get the right shows on the right networks that are produced domestically, then we should import them, if necessary. I would find it preferable to another "mommy with too many kids" show.

Of course, Ice Road Truckers was in season three. There must be some audience that finds its way to the History Channel for it and that probably explains why it still airs and is still heavily promoted.

I agree. I admit that it is an interesting subject, considering the hazards, the technology, and the psychology involved. I even watched the show's first season until I happened to miss a few episodes and tried to catch up one day in a marathon and realized that I couldn't tell the episodes apart. The same thing happened with Discovery's Deadliest Catch. In both cases, what can be said about the job can be said in an hour or two. (in the latter case it was, in the pilot). Dirty Jobs is a show that seems to understand this. Most jobs just are not so interesting as to solely inspire a weekly series, even when they are occasionally highly dangerous (only occasionally because the producers do appear to select to follow people competent in their job).

As said, all of history is a very, very broad area to be explored. I suspect that American history shows probably do well, so why not start there? For instance, one would think that especially in a time when history has been made with the election of the current President, we would get more than a handful of Lincoln biographies out of it. Why not explore historical topics that have come up recently: civil rights, race relations, the New Deal, FDR, Nixon, McCarthyism, Church and State, socialism, terrorism, Prohibition, monopolies, political machines, the Fed, Wall Street, conservation, health care, etc.? There are certainly interests in these subjects (just check the current events forums) and they are things that can educate and inspire rather than simply thrill. And, in my opinion, we could use all the education and inspiration we can get (again, see the current events forums).
