How The Earth Was Made: The Mississippi River

Hey I dont know if this show is still on the air or if this topic has been done. I would like to know about the history of the Mississippi River. I have lived near the river my whole life and I wanted to know why the flood plain of was so well defined on the border of Missouri and Illinois. When looking at satellite images of the river one can notice the river is only about a half mile wide or more. The flood plain is 3+ miles across. The bluffs on either side of the river also tend to run in straight lines as viewed by satellite. For example south of the city of St. Louis, Missouri there is an area called Cliff Cave and starting at that point south the bluffs run in straight line for 3 and half miles. My questions are has the river ever been larger with higher flow rate? Why do the bluffs on both sides of the river rise 300 feet above the flood plain? Why, in some areas, do the bluffs run in straight lines? Near Cape Girardeau the flood plain and the river look as if they go in different directions. Why? As I said I have lived near this river all my life and have questions on how it got there and where its going?
