Earth's Black Hole

Sep 23, 2007 6:19 PM
I just felt compelled I should write something about this show. It is difficult to know where to begin because the show was so bad! I thought the History channel was above this type of show, but I guess not. It is pseudo-science, and was not even cohesive and logical in it's content. First, there is NO WORM HOLE joing two deep sea trenches together. Second, the plume or vent in the Bermuda Triangle is a natural geologic occurance of volcanic activity, not the output of a so-called "white hole". Third, there is NO BLACK HOLE at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle. It there was, we would not be here. This "show" focused on the theories of one person of dubious nature (it did not mention his credentials or in what subject he held a doctorate.) Although the show interviewed scientists of opposing viewpoints, they was hardly ever shown, and everything went back to trying to show the points of the theories of the same person. I hope people of the History channel see this, although I doubt it would make a difference. This show was in poor taste, unscientific in nature, lacking any credibility, and would be ignored by a truly scientific programming channel. There will be a certain percentage of people out there somewhere who will believe this rubbish to be true, and it's not. You should really issue a statement refuting the claims made and that they are not the views of the History channel - unless they are - then I really would feel sorry for you. It is no wonder the US is falling behind the world in science.

I couldn't agree more. One would think the Bermuda Triangle has been debunked enough already.

You are absolutely right. I would also like to add that it is COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE to suggest that the thermal vents on the ocean floor "create matter". If there were any kind of black hole anywhere remotely near earth, the entire planet would be consumed. I am disappointed in History Channel for airing this program.

I had to register just because of this stupid show...

They actually label crack pot John Hutchison as "Dr.", and refer to him as Doctor throughout the show. This man is a quack and has a doctorate in NOTHING.

Here is the wiki on this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutchison_effect

I am just astounded that History Channel would put such garbage on the air, and give time to a quack like Hutchison, and refer to the man as Dr...

What a crock...

I just saw this horrible, horrible show tonight, January 6th 2009.

So they are still airing it. I'm very glad to see that others are as appalled as I am. I turned to the History Channel at like 8:40 because i intended to watch the show airing at 9pm and I didn't want to miss the beginning. Well this guy was on the screen talking about a black hole in an ocean, on the planet earth.

Let's just look at that again: a black hole. in an ocean. on a planet. our planet.

My immediate reaction was "what the? what is this?"
I had to see the rest, and oh my, it was amazing. I even watched the repeat at midnight to see the full thing. I needed to know just how bad The History Channel had become.

I completely agree that this is highly irresponsible programming. This is borderline unethical. Children could see this and think it's possible. The show is just out-and-out lies. "Some scientists believe..." No. No, one nutcase believes that crazy crap. He's the ONLY dude on the planet that thinks that. I'm going to look into contacting Center For Inquiry to see what can be done and what groups to contact to help get this show off the air.

Maybe James Randi would like this. Or Penn & Teller?

The History Channel and the producers of tha show should be ashamed. History Channel, you need to never air this show again.

PS - putting Chandra Wickramasinghe on was just the icing on the cake. Really, that was just perfect. Crackpots always bring him up to help validate their crackpot ideas. That little touch was appreciated. Thanks for that.
PSS - the show that came on after this abominatioon was pretty good. It was about asteroids killing us off. I was worried the whole time that they were going to say asteroids come from the Bermuda triangle, but luckily that didn't happen.

I am encouraged by the rational minds that saw this program and felt a responsibility to respond. I agree that this was completly irresponsible programming. When people tune in to the History Channel, they expect that they are watching something with scholastic credibility. Let's be clear about this- that program was not even close to presenting reputable scientific positions on the subject. To even call it "psuedoscience" is a stretch. If the show was on Sci-fi or Cartoon Network I wouldn't be so upset, but there will be many people who will think that a black hole inside the Bermuda Triangle connected to a white hole in the dragon's triangle via wormhole in the earth is a viable scientific theory. I swear to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that THERE IS NO BLACK HOLE, WHITE HOLE, OR WORMHOLE IN THE EARTH. Please History Channel, be responsible and own up to the fact that the only hole we can scientifically confirm is the one in Hutchinson's head!

History: "the branch of knowledge dealing with past events". One assumes there is a little quality assurance/checking of references when putting together a documentary about presumably historical events. The History Channel should be ashamed of itself for broadcasting an account based on the rantings of a discredited researcher. How about getting off of this "future history" kick (can the shows about Nostradamus and future historical disasters), and get back to what the name of your channel implies? I can always watch the SciFi channel (or is it SyFy) [sigh] for fictional accounts of future science-fiction disasters.

Couldn't agree more. Although there is a black hole at the center of our galaxy. In fact there is a black hole at the center of all galaxy's. I don't know why they couldn't have mentioned this instead of saying opinions that WERENT! facts. They do this with many shows and it has discouraged me to watch anymore.
