I recently took a tour at the East Village Visitors Center and it was by far the most interesting tour I have taken during my stay in New York. The one I took was on the history of the Bowery, but they have a bunch of other topics too. You can see their schedule on their website: www.eastvillagevisitorscenter.com. Also, I'm a student on a tight budget so I really appreciated their suggested donation policy! All around a great place, definitely check it out.
