presidential election

Oct 20, 2009 4:20 AM
In 1789 George Washington was was elected President without opposition. Ditto in the election of 1792. In the election of 1796 there were several candidates, two of which were Adams and Jefferson. The constitution at that time (according to my understanding) provided that the candidate with the highest number of votes wins the Presidency and the candidate with the second highest number of votes wins the vice-presidency. Adams got the highest number of votes and Jefferson got the second highest number of votes. So Adams was elected President and Jefferson was elected Vice-President. Bur the 12th Amendment changed that. Does anyone know of a web site which sets forth the ORIGINAL constitution setting forth language that the highest number wins the presidency and the second highest number wins the vice-presidency. Thank you very much. aabb
