Gradual decline in programing from history channel

Feb 22, 2009 9:07 AM
I have been disapointed as of lately with the programing on the history channel. the history channel is no longer the channel of intellectuals but is the channel of slack jawed yokels who instead of watching a documentery on Lincoln would rather watch an hour of the mind rotting ICE ROAD TRUCKERS. Why else would they do this but to get higher ratings.By doing this they have alienated the viewers they sought originally.

P.S
other shows that make me want to chew some tobbacco , guzzle some moonshine, and marry my cousin include:

GANGLAND
AXEMEN
ICE ROAD TRUCKERS

Dont forget Monsterquest, UfO hunters, and Gangland. I have to agree with you one hundred percent. This channel is trying to please sponsors . The programs that actually deal with history are in most cases repeats from years prior. It would be wonderful to see some new material that is inclusive of all world history, and not just the same repeats Roman Empire, Hanibal, Alex the Great, European, Meditteranian and Asia. Obviously there are programs dealing with other areas of the world but they seem to be stuck replaying the same material, no offense to Robocop. There is so much history to be explored in the rest of the world , right

Do you only watch during prime time? During the day, they focus more on historical events, during prime time they focus on shows that are history in the making. But yeah, Ice Road truckers and Axemen are stupid. If they're going to have a show about lumberjacks, they should have it about the tree farms from that Green-something company; not deforestation.

I have to agree to an extent. I agree that Ice Road Truckers, Axemen, and others are PRETTY lame.

The problem I'm having right now is that Monsterquest started out really good, but the current season has been a SEVERE disappointment. Loch Ness was good, but an entire episode about dead cattle? THERE WASN'T EVEN A MONSTER TO SEE!!!! The computer generated model was a dead cow. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!? And the most recent episode about the Boggy Creek Monster? There were no tracks, no pictures, no hair samples, NOTHING!!! It's like they're just trying to come up with filler episodes so that they can really shock us with Yeti, Bigfoot, and any other creature that people actually know about.

Even Jurassic Fight Club started out really good, but then they started recycling the same battles over and over again. Shows like these should only be half an hour long, rather than a full hour. They end up repeating themselves. I'll continue watching, but I'm sure I'm not alone in expressing how disappointed I am at how they rope us in, then they mess up with poor quality episodes.

Maybe the History Channel figured it's mostly the slack jawed yokels that have the luxury of sitting around watching cable TV. I suppose it's not all bad, remember when TLC used to be like a discovery channel? Now they are pretty much the "real estate channel". I've attempted to watch ice road truckers once, just to see what the hype was all about (hype from the numerous commericals pushing the show). I watched for about 15 minutes and all that happened was a guy sitting around the shop the whole time because he cracked the oil pan on the truck. The reason I made it more that 7 minutes is because I figured no way are they serious that this is the actual content of the show. After 15 I realized this was the actual show and I guess they were serious....click!

Actually, I think this decline has affected all the "educational" channels.
History channel became 'History', but it spends more time on popular fluff than actual history.

Discovery channel has become "slightly upscale reality channel" (on, and they are now 'Discovery'), with such informative fare as 'Worlds Deadliest Catch' and 'Dirty Jobs'.

The Learning Channel, or TLC as it's calling itself these days, has become the lesser twin to Home and Garden channel (or H&G), with more shows about dressing right, fixing your house and raising your litter'o'kids then teaching you ANYTHING!

And Animal Planet (or is it AP, Animal, or Planet yet?), which is mostly animals with bad owner reality shows, and even a totally fake paranormal animal show!
But they still have a few hold outs.

So, it's the same reason your news channels would rather talk about the oscars and which celeb is dating/fighting who than actually explain the budget crisis to us. (on, and why Headline News is now HLN)

Hello Folks- Wow- is it great to see that there are more of you out there unhappy with the new programming on NON-HISTORY !!!

Come over and join us at HISTORY NOW, HISTORY CHANNEL FEEDBACK , HISTORY CHANNEL DESIGN, and ON TV forums- maybe if the new management at NON-HISTORY see there are so many ex-viewers- then maybe they will change back to what it use to be,

The shows are fine all you need to do is turn the channel if a show you do not like comes on, every show which comes on the history channel is related to history in one way or another so you need relax.

So how exactly is Ice Road Truckers somehow related to history? If you say because the show was actually filmed a year or two ago I probably will not buy that answer.

Seriously?

Poking around Nat Geo, the Science Channel, and extreme off-times on History I can find things about the Roman Empire, Ancient Egypt, the French Revolution, the American Revolution, WWII....heck, History International is still mostly history.

If I watch history during prime time (which I don't these days) I see stuff about events which, generally speaking, happened after I graduated from college.

Saint- I see you buy into the NON-HISTORY hype to justify this crap being on a channel named HISTORY, and you spout the same nonsense that supporters of these shows have for the last three years- "If you don't like it change the channel".

I wouldn't waste my time watching this crap being pawned off as HISTORY MADE EVERY DAY.

Everything and everybody is "related to history in one way or another"- but please tell me- because nobody has been able to in three years--------- WHAT HISTORY OF THE LOGGER (etc) AND LOGGING (etc) DO THESE PROGRAMS TEACH ME ?

The only reason they are "History" is because they are on a channel named HISTORY.

Logging shows how we mess up the habitats of animals, and how we destroy the forests, and mess up the ecological system and if we continue to do so, we will suffer greatly..

I think they should combine all their shows into one. Gangsta lumberjack commando truckers who hunt monsters. I'd watch it.
