Modern Marvels Ideas for new shows

Oct 29, 2003 11:17 AM
I know the writers at "Modern Marvels" probably have many seasons from now laid out already but i want to put down a suggestion anyways and maybe someone else does as well. I think they should do show on PAINTBALL. it has more behind it then one would think it could easily fill an hour long show. please consider this "Modern Marvels".

I have a suggestion for a new worst case senerio documentary.
You have done end of the world shows like, What would happen if an asteriod hit the earth, or the cauldera in Yosimtie Natonal Park was to blow, or what would happen to the world after people are gone, etc.................
I call these type of shows WORST CASE SENERIO show, and i enjoy them very much, because they put thing in perspective and challange the mind.

I would like to see a show that studies---WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE UNITED STATES LOST ALL (OR MOST) OF IT'S OIL IMPORTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES ?
Obviously, all would come to a stop as we know it, if oil was cut off from are oil dependent country.
A day by day account of what would happen to people, how would they react, would it totally destroy the USA economy beyond repair, would war result from this loss of oil, would we all be liveing on the streets and split up into factions like the Indians, etc...

This senerio is very real just like volcanos and asteroids.
(example)
If terrorist were to crash planes into 12 oil depots, that supply oil to the US --The US would loose 50% of it's oil imports and would have to compete for oil that goes to other countries. I estimate it woud take a year and half to repair these oil depots, in the mean time the US would be without half of it's oil it needs to run the country for a least a year. I think thats enough to destroy life in the US beyond repair.
(or) a simpler senerio , what if we just ran out of oil.

THIS IS A REAL LIFE , REAL TIME SENERIO THAT WE COULD FACE, MORE SO THAN AN ASTEROID HITTING EARTH.

Modern Marvels should do a show on "Rock & Roll!" Teach us about guitars, basses, and drum kits. Teach us about effects pedals and "big stage" lighting effects. Fill us in on how big the market is for rock concerts and selling albums. Where did rock & roll come from? What are all the different sub-genres of rock? Where did it come from? Where is it going?

Greetings. Id like to bring to the writers attention a new process in agriculture...Hay drying (might be a good idea for a future show). This process is very impressive as i have witnessed it first hand. The machine that dry's the hay & bails it is [u]over 100foot long and it is the only one of its kind in the U.S. Here are two links, one to a video and an article.

http://video.aol.com/video-detail/top-quality-hay-processors-hay-drying-process/2545079008

http://hayandforage.com/hay/godiva_hay_tqhp_0808/

I think it would be great for the History channel to be the first to network to expose this to the world. The original idea was spawned by Jeff Warren. He is a very modest man and cares a great deal for love & life, this is why I am writing this. I would like to see this very very expensive venture of his prosper.
After i watched the hay drying process the first thing that came to mind was Modern Marvels.
You can contact Jeff Warren via his normal hay site, Lake to Lake Hay .com

Thank you History channel!

As part of that scenario, I would enjoy an indepth review of the steel wheel on steel rail transportation mode - electric urban streetcars and interurban trains.
(It wouldn't be amiss to include funiculars, cogwheel, cable and any other form of rail way)

Aside from the politically incorrect conspiracy theorists pointing fingers at "Big Auto" and "Big Oil" for their premature demise in the USA, it would be interesting to view the technological reasons for their inevitable return, as the Age of Cheap and Plentiful Petroleum ends.

Most people are unaware of the Laws of Physics, regarding rolling resistance, and why rail roads out performed other land based transportation modes.

It would also be entertaining to show how one track had the peak passenger carrying capacity of a 9 lane superhighway. A four track rail corridor can effectively supplant a 36 lane superhighway.

What would Los Angeles be like if it was redesigned around a robust urban streetcar and subway system, with high population density development? Clear skies and clean lungs, perhaps? No highway traffic jams?

In countries that had no access to cheap petroleum, electric powered transportation has gradually evolved into high performance, high capacity systems. See Switzerland, Japan, and France, for inspiration.

Another aspect of rail rights of way - the impact on the environment. Tracks can be constructed to allow for natural drainage. And since they require less surface area, in general, they do less damage than a roadway of equivalent passenger / cargo load.

There are also tram systems that have cars in service, that were built in the 1890s. Thus demonstrating their frugal and resource conserving potential.

It is also not well known that the majority of rail innovations were first discovered / demonstrated in the USA, but were abandoned, as rail came under medieval restrictions of the Federal Railway Administration. Case in point - the "safety regulation" that mandates HEAVY car bodies and locomotives. It causes a 50% increase in dead weight, without improving safety. And it hampers the introduction of high speed rail now found in Europe and Asia. Tilting suspensions were also an American innovation that didn't come to fruition.

Before petroleum's rise, there were boats and railroads.
After petroleum's demise, there will be boats and electric railroads.

Let us consider the idea that the world's population is doubling roughly every 40 - 50 years, in 2050, we may have over ten billion people on this planet. And that to provide for the sustenance and survival of that number, land use will have to drastically change from the current pattern.

[] Concentration of people into densely populated cities, towns, and villages.
[] Low fuel consumption, demonstrated in shelter, transportation and manufacturing.
[] Expansion of water transit corridors (engineered navigable waterways)
[] Return of electric powered rail transit as #1 land transportation mode for passengers and cargo.

But even that will not resolve the problem caused by subsequent doublings of population.

Solution: Space Colonization.
Unlike the current NASA plan to "colonize" Mars, cost effective space colonization that would support billions would require orbiting vessels - giant space colonies.

In outer space, there is a fusion power source nearby, expansion room, and a supply of materials, in orbit around the sun and planets. These giant colonies would be constructed to provide life support not only to humanity, but to whole ecosystems.

Colonies could be constructed and located in orbits around the sun, around planets, around satellites, and intersecting orbits. In fact, colonies on intersecting orbits would be the lowest cost transportation mode within the Solar system. At the optimum point, travelers would merely change from vessel to vessel, with a minimum of fuel consumption, as their small mass vector is matched.

Once the construction cycle of space colonies surpasses the population growth rate, the Earth is saved - as well as Humanity. For without the pressures of overpopulation, the conflict over scarce and finite resources (aka War) would finally end. No natural disaster would make life extinct, once there are countless habitats in innumerable orbits.

I don't think posting new show ideas helps. I haven't seen a new episode of Modern Marvels in a long time. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the show schedule either. Is it finally coming to an end?

I think that they should do a show about the Lincoln Tunnel. Like how it was made and stuff and who first had the idea for it. Since I'm going to NYC in 6 days it would be cool just to learn about it, even after the fact. Anybody agree?

I would like to see a show on how our water system works. I realized this morning that I don't know how we move water around in our modern cities. The Romans used gravity to get running water to their cities. Do we still depend on gravity? How do they keep the pressure up? How does the water get into the water towers? Do they pump it up? Or is it forced up by the pressure in the system? I'm so curious! Thanks!

I have been a fan of this show for years now. A particular episode I have recently enjoyed is the Batman Tech episode. Since I enjoyed this episode so much I was wondering if with the relatively new movie, IRONMAN, and the sequel coming soon if there would be interest in an IRONMAN Tech episode.

Perhaps this Idea will go over most peoples heads, as im not sure if we have any anime fans here. However, i would enjoy an episode Based around the Cyberpunk anime Ghost in The shell. I doubt this will happen, but i think such an e[pisode outlining the technologies of this series and, like the star wars episode, how far off we are from some of the more futuristic ideas, or if they are even physically possible.
