Modern Marvels - Dangerous Cargo - Roseville Railyard Explosions

I remember I was about 7 years old when the bombs blew. We lived about 1.1 miles away from the exploding rail cars. I have several pictures that detail the fireballs and resulting damage. I recall watching from the roof of our house seeing LPG tankers exploding and flying as if they were in slow motion. The big 2000 pound military bombs were impressive. There was a silent fireball. Then, a sweeping shock/vapor pressure wave. As the wave passed, Cablooey. You could actually see the sound wave! We had buckled walls, blown out all windows on the house. I was knocked off my feet several times. Quite exciting for a 7 year old. This was in 1973. Later in the early ninties, the railyard was renovating and uncovered several unexploded bombs from the past. The military exploded some of these onsite but hauled others to Nevada for destruction. I remember someone in a Voltswagon Bug from the initial incident was arrested for stealing a 500 pounder. He was leaving the area and the highway patrol saw the bomb as the end of it was protruding out the trunk as it was too long to fully fit and the trunk lid was bungied. Any interest and I can provide some fantastic photos. Brian Kuhl

I was 10 when this happened... still remember it to this day. I believe it was a Saturday morning because it knocked me out of bed early and we got on the roof to watch the explosions and mushroom clouds. Had to go to Sat morning bowling leagues & wanted to stay and watch. We lived in Carmichael at the time, but my older brother's house was in Roseville... they picked metal out the yard for years after.

Watching the explosions as a kid, I had no sense of significance of it. But as an adult, it makes me have a little bit of appreciation what survivors of WWII (e.g. London and most parts of Europe) and other wars go/went through. Amazing.

- I lived on Quincewood Circle & Rumford Ave, <1 mile from explosions, it was a Saturday Morning, luckily or us kids would have been at the bus stop for school on Antelope Rd / Saybrook Dr. At that time the area had a few tracks of homes and lots of empty fields...I heard my window rattle, got up, looked out it, saw no one, turned to go back to sleep, and I do not know why, but dove under my covers a split second before the window blew in. I I saw the big explosion that lifted our roof 1.5 ", caused the garage door to fly up and off, and looked like a mini-nuke...a house on Bierston St had it's gas line hit by shrapnel and burn, that was about 5 or so houses away....My friends Brian & Brad lived down the street, wanted to go see if they were ok......we didn't move back into the house for 1 1/2 years, I found shrapmetal that broke a chair in the house and pieces all over the yard.
