Insulting Bathroom Tech Misrepresentation

Sep 7, 2006 10:29 AM
I happened to catch part of "Bathroom Tech" last night, just as Julie Horan was making a statement related to the use of the left hand instead of toilet paper in Asian countries.

From my knowledge of Asian hygiene, the statements made by Horan lacked several crucial points:

1. Where toilet paper is not use, WATER is used.

2. Any Asian with a sink would wash his hands in soap and water afterward.

3. Using water to wash the rear, even without soap, is intuitively and factually far superior in removing fecal material than using only dry toilet paper.

The statements made by Horan give the clear, but false, impression that most Asians walk around with feces on their left hands. As such, several million people have been demeaned falsely.

I request that the History Channel edit this program before it airs again to correct this insulting impression.

She was describing ANCIENT methods of toilet hygiene, not MODERN methods.

I believe that Horan has no understanding about this whole issue. She made a completely incorrect and misleading statement by saying that people in Asia and far east wipe their butt with the left hand as a result of limited accessibility to luxury items such as toilet paper.
I do not understand why most people make the notion a cultural aspect having to do anything with money. I found this insulting as a person with South Asian roots. For the record people do 'wash' their butt using water and the left hand. But this has been done for a time frame more than 2000yrs. And one of the many reasons is the very early development of civilizations close to a source of flowing water there by providing easy access to water.

Dude, lighten up, she was talking about what people used to do in ancient times, not currently. Americans used to wipe their asses with grass and leaves and such before the advent of toilet paper. Get over yourself!
