History Channel deterioration

Mar 15, 2009 6:53 PM
There were few more enthusiastic viewers of the History Channel when it first split from the A & E Channel than I. For years, I checked the History Channel first when looking for something to watch. In the past few years, though, the History channel seems to have abandoned history in favor of programs of interest to Network Miniseries audiences, and endless repeats of earlier programs. Forr me, the result has been that I have largely quit watching the History Channel. I suspect that, as viewership falls, the History Channel is deliberately moving away from its roots. I believe it must move back to its roots or become just another cable channel that virtually nobody watches.

You know what? I've read that since the switch away from history to reality and Armageddon topics their ratings are higher than ever before. Which means they can charge more for commercial time and make more money.

'Cause that's what it's all about. It's interesting, though, to see the competition between H, Discovery and Natgeo channels. Right now my dial seems to stick to Natgeo. Their shows aren't so over the top and don't seem to be filmed by MTv crack addicts.

atanarjuat- I'd love to see those numbers- I have not been able to find any stats, Nielsen's, market share. I can't see how anybody can actually watch AX MEN- that show is absolutely Grade A CRAP !!!

I would have to vote for DSC and NGEO too- at least they don't pawn their Reality off as "History Made Every Day"- Somebody please tell me how home movies of a guy doing his job cutting down trees is "History" ????????

It's all about the drama. Watch the show and notice how they try to build it. Either with music and sudden camera movements. It's almost comical since I've worked on jobs like these and know what's going on. I know that these guys take chances for the camera. They want to put on as good a show as H does.

Just letting you know that I've been forced to change channels by your *&^%$##@ programming for the last time. If I had wanted to watch that crappy Iceroad Truckers promo instead of the last 20 minutes of the link I wouldn't be complaining. If -and that's a big IF- you ever decide to make your channel about "history" again, let me know.

Where is the History???? There was a time when the only channel I watched was the History Channel. Now it seems that the only time I can watch any actual history programming is early in the am. What really prompted this post was yesterday Memorial Day and the only thing on was a Monsterquest marathon. Not only is that pathetic programming it is on the verge of being disrespectful, at least if you had to show a marathon it could have been Band of Brothers. If I want watch a program about monsters or aliens I can turn on Sci FI channel. Also what does men cutting down trees or driving on ice have anything to do with history??? I am just asking to please put history back into the History Channel or myself and many others will no longer be interested.

Please no more Ice Road Truckers. Please no more Tougher In Alaska. No more crappy reality crap. Show >History< Ya know, what your name is.

And I really don't care if Doom and Gloom Armageddon programming gets ratings, it just feeds American stress and depression. We need hope in this economy not doomsday predictions.

After several years without cable TV, I enthusiastically anticipated watching the History Channel again. Imagine my disappointment when I saw that it had become the UFO/Bigfoot/Disaster Channel. If anyone knows where I can find quality history programming, please post. Thanks.

I have been a regular viewer of the history channel for quite some time now, I have seen the ups and downs of the channel and I have always stock with it. However, probably today was the last time I watched it. Tonight in the Last Days on Earth show, they so bluntly pushed the liberal agenda about global warming that it was obnoxious. I mean, it is not that the topic is not open for debate, but when the topic gets presented in such a one sided way, it removes 50% of the people from the debate. It was almost as if the show was made to glorify Al Gore (whose carbon foot print is larger than the sasquatch's). The fact that the planet is warming up is very much disputed by a growing number of scientists, and the fact that the warming is man made is a far stretch from being a fact.
To try to make a parallel between the global warming debate and the debate about whether nicotine is addictive is nothing short of disingenuous and it alienates viewers. The politicization of science for the benefit of a group of people is doing nothing but taking away from the real question to be answered: Is the planet in fact warming up, and is it man made? The answer belongs in the science arena not in Al Gore's and the like's podiums, and for the history channel to become part of the game is irresponsible at best.

So long history channel, I'll look for unbiased history elsewhere from now on.

Notice that all those monster and UFO programs are designed to put down any facts about these topics. They allow some people to talk about UFOs, bigfoot, etc. then they allow the so called experts such as scientists to deny there is any evidence to prove their cases. I remember there was a program about UFOs over Mexico city ten years ago when there were many cam records photographing the vehicles. At the end of the program an astromoner was interviewed who claimed that the UFOs seen in these tapes were caused by defects in the camera's lenses.
Another issue I have with THC is its programs on the Kennedy assassination. They did one good eight hour program ten years ago questioning the Warren Commission Report. Since then all the programs defend the Report. Since 90% of the public do not believe Oswald acted alone, it is a disservice to the viewers to put such crap on the air.

There are still some good examples of historical programming on The History Channel, but I have to agree that the MonsterQuest carp must go. What is "Marked" - biker tattoos? What does that have to do with history? I do like "Universe" and "How the Earth Was Made", but tonight I am not watching because all that is on is "Marked" followed by two or three Monsterquests.

"Marked" is okay as a show, but it just isn't history. I agree with other posts that refer to the MTV effect, which is to say that today's MTV has very little to do with what it started out as or was named after. It just became a reality network. I hope the History Channel isn't going down that same road. I am seeing more historical shows on other networks, such as NatGeo,

Get rid of MonsterQuest, UFO stories, and all the Paranormal stuff. I never understood why History Channel would broadcast Hollywood movies either. Could it be that there just isn't enough historical programming?
