Ronald Ermey's real life USMC career is not at all on the same level as his famous character Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. In real life, Ermey was a Staff Sergeant and, although a Vietnam veteran, was never awarded the Purple Heart or a combat decoration (Bronze Star, Silver Star, etc). He was a former US Marine Drill Instructor and was hired by film maker Stanley Kubrick as a consultant on how to drill USMC style and would coach the actor who would be cast in Kubricks upcoming film Full Metal Jacket. He performed a demonstration on videotape in which he yelled obscene insults and abuse non-stop for fifteen minutes without stopping, repeating himself, or even flinching - despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. Director Stanley Kubrick was so impressed that he cast Ermey as Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann.

NOW CAN YOU GIVE A BIO ON DALE DYE OF BAND OF BROTHERS? I'm curious how they noticed him when he was hired in the same capacity- tech advisor; that Ermey was. Can't get the answer out of HBO's site.

Dale Dye was born Oct. 8, 1944, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He graduated as a cadet officer from Missouri Military Academy but there was no money for college, so he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1964. He served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1967 through 1970, surviving 31 major combat operations. He emerged from Southeast Asia with numerous decorations, including a Bronze Star for valor and three Purple Heart medals for wounds suffered in combat. He spent 13 years as an enlisted Marine, rising to the rank of master sergeant. He was chosen to attend officer candidate school and was appointed a warrant officer in 1976. He later converted his commission and was a captain when he was sent to Beirut with the multinational peacekeeping force in%2

in 1982-83. He served in a variety of assignments around the world and along the way managed to graduate with a BA degree in English from the University of Maryland. Dye worked for a year at Soldier of Fortune magazine after his retirement in 1984. He spent time in Central America, reporting and training troops in guerrilla warfare techniques in both El Salvador and Nicaragua before leaving the magazine in 1985 and heading for Hollywood. He is the founder and principal of Warriors, Inc., which provides technical advisory services to the entertainment industry worldwide. Services included performer training, research, planning, staging and on-set advisory for directors and other key production personnel

I was wondering

Oct 9, 2002 11:17 AM
because he does play the 506th CO in Band of Brothers. I saw the picture of the real CO and they looked almost identical. He was also advisor in that series.

21 Oct 2002 show

Oct 23, 2002 12:32 PM
There was a question on the show, I think it was what is the oldest weapon still in use in the US arsenal or inventory.

To my knowledge it is the Marine NCO sword. Noncommissioned officers of the Marine Corps are the ONLY NCOs in any branch of the regular US Armed Forces who still have the privilege of carrying swords. In addition, they have the unique position of being the only NCOs authorized to carry what is basically a commissioned officcer's weapon. The sword is the personification of the military tradition and has been entrusted to those most responsible for maintaining it. Except for the famous Mameluke hilted sword of the Marine commissioned officers, the Marine NCO sword rates as the oldest US weapon in use. While its use is now limited by regulations to ceremonial occasions, the sword still represents "esprot de corps."

The Mameluke sword stands as the single weapon of the longest continuous use in American arms. (1862)

If that was the question asked, I can not recall exactly.

Thank you for your support.

Officers

USN and USMC at the very least are also carrying swords. Not that anyone gets any chance to use them, but they still do wear them as part of the full dress uniforms.

Check his DD214 thru public records

I think his personal website claims some combat decorations. I could be wrong. He also claims to have been promoted to E-7 I believe. But he did serve in the Corps for more than one enlistment during a War period. That's more than many can claim.

Oldest Weapon

Jan 29, 2003 12:12 PM
The NCO sword was taken out of service for a period during the Civil War after breaking off while running a man through. It was later brought back into service. This is why it is not the oldest weapon in use.....This is from by BST memory which is getting pretty rusty now.
