HistoryCENTER 11/18/2007 Bring back the Draft

I watched the myoptic viewpoint program this morning, and once again came away with a fragment of a story. Rep. Charles Rangel is unbelievable. Just prior to the 2004 elections Rangel was doing a "Chicken Little" shouting that the Republicans would re-enact the draft to drag his people into the war. Now, HE is proposing to re-enact the draft to make people more aware of who gets drafted. Can't have it both ways! Of course the other guy (who was he? who cared?) on the show was in complete agreement with everything said. Like I said, myoptic. I am personally in favor of re-enacting the draft, but not for the reason on this program. I'm in favor of it because when there was an actual draft, young people were motivated. Everyone who enjoys the right to live in this country should serve it some capacity. Whether that is in the military, peace corps, CCC, planting trees, emptying garbage cans, picking up trash, hospital orderlies, etc. Look at some of the activities that High School boys find appealing. Video games that shoot and kill virtual opponents without consequence. It's a hell of lot different when the "bad guys" actually shoot back, and the loser just doesn't reset his life. There is no doubt in my mind that this pent up aggressive, combative behavior is why events like Columbine happened. I also believe that drug use, and the general malaise of young people is due to a lack of direction. In the 60's, if you weren't in the military, you made damn sure you were in school. Now, you see a lot of young folks without direction, on the streets, or in jail. We owe it to these kids to re-enact a system of public service.
