Hero or villian. To The spanish, he brought their golden age.For the Mexican, he brought the end of the civilization of Mexico. Mexico is a pretty civilized place to me except for the killing of women and drug wars.

While he was a villain and responsible for some of the initial issues, Spain was a bigger villain. For the indigenous Mexican, Cortes and other Spaniards ended the Aztec rule and replaced it with Catholicism. In addition, the introduction of a new race and disease ultimately wiped out their chances of being able to fight for what was theirs.

He replaced it with Christianity. You sound like a protestant ... they slaughtered the natives.

Actually hibiscusflower is correct, Catholicism was introduced into Mexico by post conquest Spain, not a generic "Christianity" as claimed by San Francisco Values. Not only did Catholicism supplant the Aztec 'religion' of post-conquest Mexico, but the dreaded Spanish Inquisition eventually found it's way into Mexico later in the 16th century.

So you share the POV of the hibiscus that Catholics are not Christians, Joe?

Catholics are Christians, that's obvious SFV. I'm not trying to imply that they aren't and I regret that you perceive hibiscus and my posts that way. Yes, Christianity replaced Aztec religion after the conquest, but it was replaced by a BRANCH of Christianity you and I know as Catholicism. There is a big difference between Catholicism and Protestantism, and inquiring minds have a right to know the actual branch of Christianity that took root in Mexico after the Spanish conquest. I'm merely trying to be factual with my posts, no biggie, right?

It is a biggie, because the implication is the denial of Catholics as Christians, unless pressed to acknowledge them so. Otherwise you would have your statement stand that the Spanish did not bring Christianity and that as Hibiscus has it, they brought Catholicism. We credit our own English for bringing Christianity, not Protestantism, capice?

At that time where was the protestant church? 1519.

I never claimed any thing other than the Spanish introdueced Christianity. We know that Spain was Catholic and at that point in tima so was England, France the German Crown, Italy most all of the West... Luther haad just barely started his movement ....

I see your point. However, given the tremendous amount of branches that exist in "Christianity", often times it's a good idea to include the branch that is being referred to rather than grouping it into a generic category.

It only makes sense if your are trying to exclude Catholics from Christianity. You refer to protestants as generic Christians, but Catholics are excluded, this is bigotry.
