And given that very often the Apostles didn't even understand what Jesus was saying, it is pretty arrogant to claim to fully understand his teachings 2k years later...
I think part of the problem is that when God speaks to man in generalities, man hears in specifics...When God speaks with specificity, man becomes obsessed with minutiae and ritual resulting in too much emphasis on ceremony and too little on substance...

So honor thy mother and father means I can treat grandma and grandpa and step-mom and step-dad like crap, right? And just biological father, right? Not adoptive father or other male guardian, right? Exactly how MUCH honor is mandatory? Can I do it 4 days a week, and slack on the other 3?

This is BRILLIANT! And so simple and profound that it is easy to miss..
It is CLEAR that they repeated failed to grasp Jesus' meaning. And he was THERE to clarify it PERSONALLY. To claim it crystal clear NOW, withOUT personal counsel of Jesus should sprain the imagination of the most gullible..

LOL...Good one...I was speaking more to humankinds insistence on splitting hairs as opposed to seeing what is right in front of them...God's general teachings are sufficient, it is when the autocracies of religion seek to "intertpret" that things get complicated. It seems to invariably be founded in a need to control or to become indispensible to salvation...Like selling maps and tickets if I may quote you...
I think God has already provided us with all we need to find him within ourselves, and that for each individual there will be individual answers...

Please read the Frederick Nietze Comment I have posted below, it may pertain to some of you
I haven't read Frederick Nietzsche throughout but he was known to assert "we are to surpass mankind." I understand he succumbed to madness as an unbeliever.
St Aug and I perhaps are worlds apart as to whether the Roman Catholics actually and literally "own" the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ with no Jewish Messianic believers who were directly instrumental in establishing the Church. Whether they (Catholics) have records and historical facts or not doesn't prove anything, they just simply make claim. If so, who "owned" the Church before the Roman empire?
What, were the already existing believers suddenly subject to pagan Romans? Were the believers to throw all their weight and belief system to some artificial deity? Jesus Messianic believers are extremely detail as to whom they'll bow to. The believers were at first reluctant about the apostle Paul a Jew himself who persecuted the Church. There is no written or oral history or records of this great "turn-over" or "transfer" of God's Church to heathens. There of course were Roman believers, Greek, Jew, Egyptian, Arabian. Christians have no business deigning, bowing to any potentate, preacher, apostle, pastor etc....Jesus is Head of the Church and believers are joint heirs. Jesus is the Way, Truth and Life of which is through faith Whose the Author and Finisher of.
The Messianic believers were the original authentic writers of the New Testament who wrote in Hebrew what Jesus and His disciples spoke. The so-called Roman Catholic Church wasn't even in existence when the Words were penned by the Jewish writers of the day and not one single Roman penned not one single Word, this is indisputable. And is why I have a Hebrew Bible that inflect the words of the Old and New Testament.
St. Aug is my fellow brother in Christ and has great intellect in matters concerning the Catholic Church but we depart when it comes to the Catholic Church being the "way" fellow believers needing official "recognition" as to whether they need confirmation whether they're saved or lost. This is unconscionable and I'm out of adjectives.

While we differ on the RCC, as a Roman Catholic Christian, I know where your heart lies and will always respect your love and devotion to Our Lord Jesus Christ.
