I don't know about that. It is a lot like 'hunting cats'. When you take up a cat hunt (not to hurt them, catch by hand and release) during the night, it seems impossible to find or catch a cat. When you get good at it you find out, they aren't that clever and like witches, know very few places to hide.

I doubt this has any thing to do with religion. Ridding the village of extra mouths, during famine, is simply just that.

They could have been singing the "Battle Hymn of Republic" and I would still say it has more to do with greed. How many Nazi's you think really believed in Hitler's master Race, rather than just went along with the song as they stole assets.

In some of the poorest parts of Nigeria, where evangelical religious fervour is combined with a belief in sorcery and black magic, many thousands of children are being blamed for catastrophes, death and famine: and branded witches. Denounced as Satan made flesh by powerful pastors and prophetesses, these children are abandoned, tortured, starved and murdered: all in the name of Jesus Christ.
Just in case you're unaware of it, the religion described above isn't Christianity either.

Child - can't you read? It says this was done in THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. Now, do you recognize the name? Does it say ---Christian??
Of course the people doing it are ignorant fools., Many people calling themselves Christian are ignorant fools. Indeed, many on this board have attributed evil and things that happen in this world to demons and black magic.
Yes, fools. And dangerous ones, who should be stamped out for their crimes against innocent people. Religion is no excuse for stupidity and arrogance.

How many that fill the pews you think are really buying the pitch, Telly? Church is conformity. To strike punitively at a wrong doer, or outsider (an accused witch must condiered thusly) reenforces ones position in the tribe. Add reward to the mix, and I see a zealous effort, in budding.
Fear, look at nazi Germany. How many Germans feared the Jews? How many cart pushing Germans really thought them selves superior to the grocery store owning Jew? Probably only the very simple, the rest were content to say 'seig heil, we are the master race" and take the assets. The fear was in the heart of the Jew, once they saw.

How about the great big dot of the tribal religion of witchcraft and superstition practiced in the area. How about nobody even mentioned which religion these people belong to. How about when was the last time you saw a Christian church involved in stamping out witchcraft? They don't even say anything against ouija boards in most churches anymore.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that a better translation was "poisoner" as opposed to "witch".
