Did the biblical Jesus exist?

Nov 6, 2009 10:29 AM
For those who are interested in the HISTORY of Xtianity I offer the following information sources regarding whether or not the Jesus described in the biblical accounts actually existed. Many of the sites include references to religious and academic sources to support their conclusions. You will notice that some of the sites conclude that a historical figure who became the biblical Jesus actually existed, while others show that the biblical Jesus was merely an invented character.

Those who would rather proselytize or participate in interdenominational feuds or just discuss personal matters should not feel the need to participate in this HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY discussion on whether or not the biblical Jesus actually existed.

Did the biblical Jesus exist?

It would appear so or you wouldn't have anyone to be posting this about.

Does that mean you believe that Superman and Batman and Harry Potter and Frodo Baggins and Luke Skywalker must have also existed or else no one could post anything about them?

Not to imply that you are gullible or anything like that, but how do YOU determine fact from fiction?

Not only has Batman's image been seen in comic strips and comic books, but he had his own TV show and the movies that made him seem ever so real, even though his appearance did seem to change from one movie to the next. You can even find Batman giving out autographs around some of the movie theaters. That is much more than we have for the biblical Jesus, yet amazingly with all the images, stories, and personal appearances of Batman, there are still more people who believe that the biblical Jesus was real but Batman is not real. Go figure. Why would some people believe in the existence of a biblical character for whom there is no independent evidence outside of the NT stories? Maybe they just WANT TO BELIEVE.

I have no problem with people who just want to believe. Some believers want to have laws passed to require nonbelievers to conform to religious beliefs or have their religious beliefs made part of our secular government. Those are the ones who are creating the problems. If an evangelical Xtian is going to try to convince me to believe in the existence of some imaginary Jewish god, then I am not the type of person who will just ignore their sales pitch, but instead I will stand up to them and show them how their beliefs are wrong. I have no problem with people who just want to have their religious beliefs and are not trying to push their religious beliefs onto others. I am, however, willing to discuss religious beliefs and religious history with people who wish to simply discuss those beliefs and history. If I pop a few soap bubble gods along the way "what's it to you?"

On what evidence do you base your certainty?

How much of the biblical story do you think is true?

"Yes" was all you said in your post on 11 November.
