Message Boards Announcement
Dear History members:

In February, 2010, History boards will begin the process of upgrading our community message board software. We are moving to a new community software, KickApps, that will provide greater functionality and ease of use. This transition will take place during the last part of February; the last day that the current boards will be available to you will be Feb. 28, 2010.

We realize that many of you have posted great content over the years and might want to save your posts. Please take this time to go back through the boards and save what you want to keep on your own computer. These boards will no longer be accessible after February 28, 2010.

If you would like to ask a question about the new boards, click here: http://boards.history.com/forum/Message-Boards-User/108

There will be more details to come as we roll out the new community software. Thank you for your continued patronage. We'll see you on the new, improved boards!

History Channel's 2012 episodes

Jan 8, 2009 1:23 PM
Is there really any other reason for these shows other than to frighten their viewers? If they're so certain 2012 is coming and it will be a world wide catastrophic event, why bother saying anything at all if its just going to be a disaster caused by a force that is too great for us to prevent?
Sorry if a thread like this has been created before, I was just wondering. Thanks.

I definitely agree with you there. I remember when History Channel used to show FACTUAL programs and not myths presented as science. It's sad to see them going for shock value and turning into an entertainment rather than an educational channel.

There is so much more going on that any of you are aware of the truth lies right in front of your face. no one ever said that the armageddon and the apocalypse had to be bad. It's a descision that lies in the hands of man. He will make a choice dependent on his choice will determine his future. The apocalypse is simply the reveiling of a new era. I recommend doing your homework and studying up on it. you wouldnt want to be left out.

I am aware that human kind has the ability to prevent catastrophes like nuclear war or possibly global warming.
But what about the forces they describe as asteroids or incredibly violent volcanoes? Is that really something for us to prevent? I think not.
I understand the hidden message that says we should unite as one people and live in harmony. They could atleast stress that a little bit more.

very true that cataclysmic volcanoes and asteroids are impossible to protect against. but at the same time thats not the major concern. true it has happend and will happen again theres no denying it but right now we stand in the face of ultimate destruction at the hands of mandkind. we need to surpas the nuclear era into the next. thats our biggest threat. anyways... all I was trying to get at is that, life is about to change dramatically and not nessesarelly for the bad, it's all our choice for what happens.

I dont think it is so much as "shock and awe" as it is an attempt at informative disaster preparedness.
What can you do in the event of catastrophic "natural" disaster? Prophisey, when coupled with the degree of knowledge known at the time, is a pretty far stretch of the imagination. Was Michel Nostradomas having daydreams?
He employed arcana as well as physical science to address his assertions. Almost any book of musings can be applied to relevant cataclysmic occurences.
We are simply heading the way our previous "earth", Venus, has gone. Our little whorl is not expanding, but contracting, thus necessitating our need to embed our legacy:DNA, into the coming "new earth", Mars.
We, will be destroyed, no doubt, but when?
Assigning world events to a chronological prediction is nor convincing enough to be believed. Yet, the very events that have occured whithin the breadth of Nostradamas explainations has an eerie relevance.

Why do we have a fuel gauge in our Car?
To let us know or warn us that we are getting low on fuel and it would be a good Idea to stop to refill with gas, Correct?
Is that scary?
It would be if you in the middle of nowhere late at night with no gas. But since we have a fuel gauge as a warning protection device we feel more comfortable driving don't we?

Isn't it ironic NASA has just warned of Solar Doomsday.
Solar Flares to peak in lets take a guess
2012.
"A powerful solar storm could cause catastrophic damage on Earth, shutting down the U.S. for months and leading to a potential loss of governmental control, researchers say." ~Foxnews

Now why would they say this, hmm the fuel gauge effect to warn us or let us know we should do something to protect our electrical grid from a major solar storm attack. We have time but if we do not use urgency to protect our electrical systems from solar storms then there is a great possibility of problems.
Through History the only way it seems we as people to ever get anything of major importance done is to be scared of the possible outcome if we do not do anything.

For History aspect, This series has a lot to do with History.
history of prophets and the Maya calendar as the history of our future. Whether the prophecies are actually fact or fiction the reality is that we do not live in the garden of Eden and we do have to take precautions and prepare for anything and everything whether it ever comes or not.
Not being prepared creates a ten fold of panic.
Preparation creates more of a peace of mind.

I love the series, I've Tivo'd them, Good stuff interesting but I'm not going to sweat bullets about the earth being demolished.
We have the technology to over come major cataclysmic events. And it all starts by warning us like the fuel gauge does.

Its people like you people who send this world in the wrong direction. Simply love and do nothing but good. Or else in return you will recieve darkness with no light. We simply have all the history we need to learn all lessons. Crusades, who do you believe always wins?

Light can slip threw any hole, no matter howfar you fell in the cave. The smallest hole of sunlight will give you hope to dig your way out. Simply look at 2012 as our last chance.

The problem is that they never present any skeptics or debunkers in this program. While they couch things with words like "may" and "could" the overall effect is that the show presents itself as factual when it isn't.

The "History Channel" has been doing this stuff for a while now. Between all of this "prophecy" crap and the UFO shows I think they need to change the name to the Metaphysics Channel.

The reason its appropriate to discuss the 2012 scenarios is because it is possible for man to head off this disaster. Only if good (God) wins out over evil (devil). My persoanl position is that man will not change his ways and God will intervene. if you look at our own country the growth of liberalism has eroded our morals and values to an alarming extent. The devil is definitely flexing his muscle. The sad part is many good intelligent people are blind to this fact. We had better get ready to meet our maker because its right around the corner. This is not myth. Prayer and religious conversion on a mass scale are the only way to prevent God's direct intervention.

yes religious conversion on a mass scale of realizing we are our own gods we make the choices and if we don't change well then Big Brother will take control for us and do away with all the idiots still killing in the name of god and being filled with mysticism. it was created for the sole purpose of giving man a reason to live and behave to moral code so that mass chaos dosnt insue. now that the need for religion is dissapating its time to take control of our own destinies...

What is there to be frightened of?

If "the big one" is a meteor or volcano, there's nothing we can do about it. So enjoy every day you have left.

If it's something humans can avoid by changing our ways, we should discuss it with everyone who will listen. That is the only way to plant the seeds of change.

Either way, they're not just scaring people. These shows could prompt people and governments into making changes toward a better world. Or, at the very least, remind us to live each day to the fullest.

Hopefully, both.

I've been watching these episodes off an on now. I have concluded that the message they're sending is be prepared, because that day may come when we least expect it.

However, I feel that it's nothing big until we actually know for sure if it is a big deal. We should move on with out lives and continue our days, on the average American, or whatever culture, ways.

I agree with you. I feel that religion (most of them) was developed to give people guidelines for there lives. The problem lies in the interpretation.
