Complaint: Come on, guys!

Hi, The History Channel is quite an overall disappointment. It appears that you rarely show programming of historical significance. Who are we? Where did we come from? How could it be that we are so at the mercy of events that happened decades, centuries, and even millennia ago? The Axial Age, The Crusades, the evolution of language, Plato's dialogs, the evolution of religion (from polytheism to monotheism), the history of Tibet (and even its "Internal" martial arts), all of these represent programming that should at least be considered for long-term. Shows that nurture and even challenge us. Why are you still showing Ax Men, Ice Road Truckers, and MonsterQuest? What do these subjects have to do with history? Are you so desperate for subjects? History is so much more rewarding of a study than this. Come on, guys? I have been without cable programming for many years, and have just recently come back. Perhaps I've caught The History Channel in a lull. I have seen some of your work, e.g. "Barbarians: The Huns," to be wonderful. Shows on subjects as these should be the norm, not the exception/pleasant surprise; nor should they be reserved primarily for your web site. Thank you for your time and consideration. Forgive my frustration. Regards, A paying customer

I could not agree any more. Here we are on Memorial Day. I click to see if THC is going to be doing stuff to honor the day...ou know Band of Brothers,Mail Call,Dog Fights...ect. And low and behold what do you guys have the nereve to show? MONSTER QUEST....holy heck fellas. That is pretty damned low even for you guys whom seem content to drive a nail in the heart of history. I get more "history" from PBS than you fellas and I don't even have to pay for that channel.I am seriously going to ask around and see if my local provider would let me trade off THC for some other non-realty show ,booger monster,UFO...hype foolishness. THC....now replacing the History for Hype or Hysteria.

AMEN! I couldn't agree anymore. I have been thinking that the History Channel has been going down hill for a while now. What business does the history channel have in reality tv? What's with all the doomsday programming, who's so infatuated with the end of the world at history channel and what does it have to do with history. They need to bring back the classic programming they used to have. What ever happened to modern marvels, when was the last time there was a new episode. I have come to the conclusion that the Histroy Channel is going to fall into the same hole that the Discovery channel did long ago. reality tv and gameshows. Maybe someday they will make a show about the history of the history channel.

I couldn't agree more!!! I was so happy to see that listed number three was a complaint about the History Channel programming...e.g. Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men and Monster Quest. It seems these are the only programs they can show at prime time. I've tried to tune in all weekend (during the evenings) and all that is on is one of these three LOSER programs! Every other word is a "bleeping" sound. The person makeing these programming decisions obviously wants History Channel to compete with MTV or the likes. Why can't we have "history" programming??? Why must every channel try to compete with reality TV and the THUG channels? The best time to watch history programming is at 5 am when they show History Classroom. I am so disappointed in the decisions being made at this channel. It used to be my favorite channel with awesome archelogical and historical programs. It's sad they resort to this type of entertainment!! SHAME ON YOU HISTORY CHANNEL!!!

I'm with you! These programs are more in line with National Geographic than history. It really wouldn't be so bad except they continue to play the shows over and over and over again for weeks on end. Another thing - what's the deal with Global Warming? Every scientist worth anything knows that this is a fictitious event with a fictitious causation but it seams like every other show you guys put on has to have a 'Global Warming' message in it as if it's a given! Like the Alaskan glacier melt off during the summer. The show uses this one event as proof of Global Warming - yet Washington State is experiencing the coldest spring and summer I've ever seen! What does that prove? Global Cooling? You guys need to wake up and smell what you're shoveling.

I was always happy with the History Channel's savvy and professionalism. But recently, it seems to have lost its sense of its mission and purpose, and is currently diving ever deeper into trashiness and sensationalism. I'm even fine with Monsterquest, an exploration of earthly mysteries like my favorite one, Bigfoot. It has a history; cultures throughout the world have a tradition of memories of this creature. This tradition has a long history in North America among the Native Americans. But "Ax Men," "Gangland," "Mega Disasters," an obssession with the gloom-and-doom of impending endtimes, and now, the deepest wallow yet in trashiness, sensationalism, and competing with the dregs of the airwaves, reality shows-"Shockwave." Please, folks, remember what you were founded for. If we wanted to watch trashy reality shows, we'd tune into the networks.

The "history" channel is harming academic learning. If you are a history professor, tell you students not to watch the "history" channel.

I guess TV always comes down to the ratings race and targeted age groups wanted as a viewers' market, or who make up the biggest portion of a television channel's audience. In the History Channel's case, I understand it's males 18-35 or something close to that. Even when this channel dealt more with history, it could have been called "The World War II Channel," WWII having been determined to be that group's subject of greatest interest. Now this channel is going into other areas entirely. But I think it's safe to say that it's those with a genuine interest in history who tune in to The History Channel.

Of course, The History Channel will start to lose that audience, those of us with an interest in history. They're obviously more interested in other audience markets, namely younger, as usual. I've never understood that. Do television and advertising think that older and more educated viewers have less money to spend than the younger age groups, or that younger age groups will more readily spend it?

You should read my post in the newsgroup soc.culture.usa re: the "history" channel. The "history" channel is nothing more than a clever ruse that is harming academics and students of history with its totally historically irrelevant programming.

A question to ponder at this point is: How long can a channel that has turned its back on presenting history call itself The History Channel? During the day, you can still watch many of the great shows and series that THC has produced in the past, even their fine shows covering a period THC hasn't touched with a ten-foot pole since the '90s, and which I savored while they lasted-the history of the Frontier and the West. Primetime is the time that TV programmers have always been afraid to fill with quality programming. For primetime, it's "Scrape the bottom." But there's some interesting television history being made here. Here we have a channel devoted to history turning its back on its own subject and its own audience as being irrelevent. Which leads to the old question of whether it's possible that commercial television will ever be used to its potential.

I have to agree about the listed shows being weak on history. However, they all fit into exploration and entertainment, which as a fringe topic, is not unknown to history. Complaints about "Shockwave" were a bit odd, since they just show the details of explosions and accidents that made the news -- true, I always wish they'd cover some more historical incidents like the Mont Pelee eruption. But I can see how that show remind people of all the other Crazy Video shows. I thought "Mega Disasters" was on another channel; it's more of a Discovery Channel topic. I'm tired of doom & gloom & sensational crud, but disasters are a part of history, too. I have to say, though, that running MonsterQuest for Memorial Day was rude at best. I even mentioned it to some veterans at our barbecue gathering ... not appreciated. A day of hunting for wartime shipwrecks would have been reasonable. But chasing monsters through the woods? A real head-scratcher.
