"Genghis Khan: achieved more than perhaps any other in his lifetime, but it must be wondered whether that achievement is thanks largely to his generalship, or the inherently gifted Mongol fighting force, whose horse archery presented his enemies with hail after hail of arrows and no effective means of striking back. More importantly much of his empire was attained under sub commanders, rather than through his own military feats, although the same can be said of Eisenhower. " He also absorbed and implemented all conquered peoples technologies, and turned the horde into a decimal system that allowed for superior organization and tactical maneuvers. He turned a mass of warring tribes into a meangrinder, with proportional spoils and always kept in mind the sanctity of mongol life. Most leaders tend to have superior starting armies where this man turned an entire people into a united war machine.

Alexander accomplished a lot by himself conquering from Greece to the outskirts of western India. But his empire fell apart after he died. Genghis Khan and the Mongols were one of the greatest military force on the planet, and created a lasting empire. The empire of the Khans was responsible for saving the Byzantines and the rest of Europe by annihilating the Caliphate. But the Mongol Empire was not created by Genghis alone - his generals such as Subotai, Jebe, etc and descendants such as Jublai played large roles in establishing and expanding the empire. etc

Well, he may not be my choice, but Geronimo was a pretty amazing military leader. He held off the Mexican and American Army for days with only eleven warriors. Hitler couldn't do that.

If you ask who was the Greatest Millitary Leader in WWII, I would have to say Gen. George Patton. He did what others said was impossible. Re: Relief at the Battle of the Bulge.

(Posting this with a friend's help). You are right, but I would also list a lot of other people. Each generation has their own. Like Alexander the Great, there are too many to list.

Well, here's one that might stir the pot a little. Curtis LeMay? I just read a new biography that tries to get to the bottom of whether LeMay was a War Hero or a War Criminal. Pretty timely... http://www.warrenkozak.com

I am clearly prejudiced on this topic, but I have just completed a biography of Curtis LeMay ... LeMay:The Life and Wars of General Curtis LeMay. He may not have been the greatest, but he turned the air war around for the US in Europe during WWII from an ineffective and costly failure to success, he went on to defeat Japan and avoid a very costly invasion and if that weren't enough, he was instrumental in defeating the Soviets during the Cold War by once again, turning an ineffective and demoralized SAC into the deadliest force in history. He had his flaws but he was the only general in WWII to fight IN FRONT of his troops... everytime he sent his bombers on the most dangerous missions, he insisted on flying the lead plane in the formation himself. No other general in WWII did that.

There are many greats, but the clear choice is Alexander. He smashed the world before he was thirty. He was king of greece, pharoah of egypt, emperor of persia and more all at the same time. He had a rediculous ability to break down a battle field and change on the fly if needed. People throw the word genius around alot, but I think he was one of the few who really was, and he had an incredible thirst for conquest. If he wouldn't have died so early I believe he would have conquered Europe for sure and perhaps even more of Asia, and he had the burning desire to do it. If he would have lived to see one or two more major campaigns I don't think this would be a question anymore but rather a known fact that Alexander was the greatest of all time. I think if he would have had more time he would have conquered most of the Eastern hemisphere (at least the regions that were of any signifigance). I doubt anyone could have seriously opposed him during his time, but i guess who knows. In just barely over one decade since the time he became king of macedonia until his death he changed the world forever. His only serious blunder in my mind is that it all fell apart when he died, but i guess who expects to die at 32 when you are king of the world? 2nd place goes to Ghengis Khan and after that i think it gets to hard to call it.

I think that there is no greatest general because all of these canidates were from different time periods and fought differently, but if I had to choose I would choose Genghis Khan.

king leonidas of sparta wasnt a great stategic military leader, he is just great in the sence of valor and selflessness, he didnt even choose the pass at thermlopylae it was chosen by a board who designed the 2 pronged defence. Themistocles was a great ancient world naval military leader. Hannibal and his father hammilcar barca were great strategist.Cryus the great was staggeringly smart and a brilliant tactition.Napoleon was clearly great, but in my mind the greatest is Megas Alexandros (alexander the great.) The Stategies he used in the 4th century b.c. are used today. No man in history used his numbers better than alexander. No man in history exploited any advantage given to him as well as alexander. He also realized the importance of advantages gained by psychological attacks. Second generation great military leaders ussually are motivated by living up to the shadow of thier father i.e. hannibal barca (son of hammelcar barca) Xerxes the great (son of darius the great{not the darius that met alexander in battle at gaugemela) Ramesses the great (son of seti I) and so was alexander, but he was more than the son of a great king, he was a great king,a great founder of cities, a great melder of different societies and cultures, and the greatest military leader of all time. bar none.

The strange thing but I think that there are no good leaders in 19-20-21 centuries. As if they all had disappeared after Napoleon's wars. May be this is because modern armies are too restricted by the rules and doctrines .... and there is no place for creative
