If History just aired the type of shows you call for, they'd be in Chapter 7 inside of 6 months.

It is a true shame that Matt won't be back telling a story which needs to be told; that today's railroads are a vital part of America's infrastructure. Unfortunately, Matt was made to appear, through editing and direction, like the very incarnation of the absolute worst stereotype of a railfan. This portrayal deeply offended the very group of people who would otherwise have been the show's greatest supporters. As I have stated before, I would have liked to see MATT given a second chance to do the show right with a technical advisor and better directing and production. Heck, just getting the facts straight and a little slow down of the tempo would probably make the show a winner if it was shown at an earlier time slot so the kids who just graduated from Thomas the Tank Engine could receive proper training.

I don't know MSURLO- THE HISTORY CHANNEL had a strong, loyal, faithful core audience whose TV Tuner was glued to THC- and was doing fine until the new management came along and decided to make THC just like every other channel.

THE HISTORY CHANNEL was a niche channel- that catered to a certain group of people- people who love "history"- why can't people who love "history" have their own channel ? And shouldn't they expect that to be a channel that calls itself HISTORY ?

In it's attempt to attract a younger audience, NON-HISTORY alienated the old faithful viewers of THC, by changing to mindless entertainment.

My viewing of NON-HISTORY has been "Almost Never" for a long time now- only watching on the rare occasion when there is some "history" program on, and not some substandard production pawned off as "History" to justify it being on a channel named (NON) HISTORY.

The new management of NON-HISTORY have created a new niche channel- my question is, when NON-HISTORY cancels their favorite show and they can no longer write into their "Teen Idol" forums and post "Who's your favorite ...."- will they remain faithful viewers of NON-HISTORY ? Or will they also move on like us viewers of THE HISTORY CHANNEL have.

You must be true to yourself- if you call yourself "HISTORY", then you proclaim yourself to be a channel that provides the best "History" product you can to the viewer.- not some "home movies" of some guy doing a hyped up dangerous job, pawned off as "history".

You stand or fall by your name. If you succeed, then you have provided the viewer with the "history" product they expect- which is what THE HISTORY CHANNEL had done, and was doing.

If you fail, then you fail because you didn't provide the viewer with the best "history" product they wanted. But you have remained true to yourself.

You don't make changes where they are not needed, or wanted- just to be like everybody else and put out a product that is no where near what your name proclaims you to be.

I liken it to HEINZ bottling HELMAN'S MAYONAISE in their Ketchup bottles, labled HEINZ KETCHUP and selling it as HEINZ KETCHUP.

I wouldn't be surprised if NON-HISTORY does fail and go off the air- and I wouldn't miss it. But I do wish they would change their name- then they could air all the mindless entertainment they wanted to, without having to pawn it off as "History".

And more importantly, their failure wouldn't be blamed on their failing to produce the best "History" product they could for the viewer.

Ltrazordaddio,
I don't completely disagree with you. THC needs to cut down on the doomsday and blue collar hero shows and air more historical material but they can no longer keep the lights on with just historical shows. A balance has to be struck but THC needs to provide QUALITY programming. Yes, THC needs to change.

On that one I can agree with you 150+% MSURLO!.

Ya know, who gives a darn about Matt Brown, aka the host of Extreme Trains.

Thanks to you all who want to gripe about some guy who just fulfills his inspiration of making a show not only for young kids who may grow up and like trains like us railfans do already, but for those who loved watching the show.

Whether Matt was a goof or not, I was one of several who viewed the show every tuesday night and loved watching the entire hour of it all.

On top of it all, I think this just goes to show that you all here do not want to sit down and watch a comedian do his act on the comedy central channel once in awhile.

I thank all you crackheads for blowing the show. Thanks a darn lot!!! :(

A number of people have commented on the style of recent History Channel programs in general and the intended target audience. I would concur with the opinion that the quality of some of the programs aired by the HC is not good and that many of them are not historical. I would further add that the need to add "extreme" to the title of many programs is recent fad that could be done without.

It would seem to be quite meaningful that several people report that the Trains program is very fascinating to pre-schoolers is a significant point. It could be that a kiddies' program was produced and big people are trying to watch it for the trains and find the format to be indigestible.

Nothing too wrong about the host!

That's right. It's not the host who's the problem. It's the producer! This isn't History for Kids channel!!!

Tonight's show: "hundreds of bags need to go to the right destination!" Right? How many bags? 200!!!

Anyone who's been to an airport of a third world country can see THOUSANDS bags getting routed around the world in a day! How many bags the Chicago AIRPORT routes in an HOUR??? Such "extremely" complicated job to route 200???

But perhaps for the pre-schooler who has yet to count to 100, 200 IS indeed a BIG number! ;)

I should have known better. A program with catchy title tend to disappoint. Period. The program that has a really boring name such as 60 minutes interviews the pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson. Nothing extreme about that to warrant a catchy name. "Extreme Trains" talk about routing 200 bags in a rail station!!!

Just another aerofoamer.
Hey Junkie, did you know that the average airline passenger costs the taxpayer ten times as much as an Amtrak passenger. If I want welfare, I'll go to the Department of Social Services, NOT the airline ticket counter.

Really? Be serious! Matt is enthusiastic (maybe EXTREME enthusiasm) but that only made me smile and I got enthusiastic too. I have great childhood memories of trains, but I am new to being an adult fan. I had no idea about the contributions trains have made to our country's growth and even technologies. It may be old hat to you, but I appreciated a lot of the points made by Matt. Would you rather some monotoned announcer read from a script? If it hadn't been for Matt's enthusiasm I would have been bored to death and never made it through the first episode. Imagine! Someone who is happy to have a great job, and shows it. YAY! MATT!!

I like Matt. I'm 46, I wouldn't want someone like Peter Graves hosting the show. It would put me to sleep. Matt's doing his job, he's like any other host of reality type show. His love of trains is evident. I agree that the script they give him inflates the drama, but all those other shows follow the same format...the idea is to make everything look amazingly dangerous. AX Men, Ice Road Trucker, ad that goofy show that got cancelled about the LA shipyard. They all use the same hyper narrative style.
I like Matt regardless of the hype he has to generate. He seems sincere.

I love trains. I am not as serious a train fan as some folks on here but I love riding trains, watching trains, etc. I was extremely happy when I found out about the "Extreme Trains" show. All that said, I have been quite unimpressed with the host. Rather than repeat a lot of whats been said on this thread, I will say that I pretty much echo the sentiments expressed the the original poster, Bill Lane. I'm sure Matt is a great guy and I like his passion for trains...but he is just not the right guy for this show.
