As a single mother of two kids...I happen to think the host is just fine. Yes, as an adult, he can get kind of annoying (especially when my son is watching the same episode for the tenth time that day)...but in all reality, we can all be annoying :)
I like the fact that Matt has captured my son's attention. My kids feel as if they know him personally. My son is 7 and is autistic. My daughter is 4 and enjoys the shows just as much.
As a parent, I am thrilled that my kids love to watch something besides cartoons all the time and I thank the History Channel for producing a show that they can relate to. Their great-grandparents love to watch the show with them.
Please don't replace Matt. I think if the show was any different then my kids wouldn't like to watch it so much. But they do describe things so that my 2nd grader can understand them. And trains is all he talks about. Let the youth enjoy watching something that is good for them instead of the other stuff on t.v.
Thanks :)

Let the youth take this NON_HISTORY show else where and get lost. This channel should only show HISTORY Programming.

Sovietcollector, again YOU ARE WRONG!!! Trains ARE history. I have never in my life seen such a cynical, hateful individual. Though you did not like the show, there is a thing called a REMOTE CONTROL. You could have changed the channel

Same old lame argument and same old "change the channel"- we all know Trains are "History" and that we can change the channel.

Daddy-o and Soviet, you ought to see my new cable plan. 3 ALL WAR ALL DAY ALL NIGHT channels including Military History Channel, brought to you by THC. BTW, there is a rail channel, you just have to look for it.

I would like to check out the Rail Channel- what is it called ?

Hey- now we need an ALL DAY ALL NIGHT.... HISTORY..

You don't get the Pentagon Channel. (Official DOD) They have a show called Battleground which features old DOD films BURSTING with history.

Hello everyone! First let me say a tad about myself...

I am a GIRL railfan who got started when I was 1 year old by seeing Frisco #1522 with my parents and my brother who was 3 at the time. We grew up on Thomas the Tank Engine and train magazines. Now, in our late teen years, we are both still NUTZ about trains, and at times can be seen standing near a set of locomotives throttling up and reaching notch-8 yelling "YEAH!" That being said, we are responsable and keep our love in a reasonable (and still fun) form to where we do not get in trouble or give our fellow railfans a bad name.

We both watched quite a few episodes of Extreme Trains and were glad to see a show about trains on TV again (we love shows like Trains Unlimited and Trains & Locomotives), but I have to admit that it has been a source of quite a few jokes around our household.
I am not going to get into any kind of bashing (because personally I think it is innapropriate), but my comments are only meant to help the product. I believe having a show like this that is good and enjoyable can spark lots of good things, including the next generation in our hobby (such as how I started out.) Isn't going out in the fresh air and seeing part of what makes America great better than sitting in front of a video game set shooting guys in a ghetto?
Here's my take of the show - most of the time Matt acts like a spaz. We sort of expected this from the name "Extreme Trains", but I think it is taken a little too far. I understand Matt's love for these beasts and I share it, but I agree with a few on here that he may be giving some of us a bad name. My recommendation (whether to Matt or to THC producers) would be just to tone it down a LITTLE. Give us more cool camera shots of the equippment that don't make us dizzy, just interested. Also, let Matt be himself, but don't push him to make it overly EXTREME. He can still be very excited without acting foolish. I know how it feels.
I totally agree with what one previous poster said: the train crews that I know appreciate someone who they can tell has a true love for it, not someone that looks like it is made up to be interesting. The episode on #844 really hit home with me because I had that experience, and I got it by being reasonable and safe. (And by God's grace!) The crew members we met were some of the most train-crazy people I'm aware of, but you can't tell it because they are yelling how awesome it is - you can tell by the constant smile on their faces. When I was in the cab of #844, I felt like yelling "This is so AWESOME!!!" but I didn't actually do it. I showed my respect to these people who have my dream job and tried to prove to them that the real love of trains is something we can share, not just proclaim. They know this already...
I am good friends with a few railroad men who are also railfans. One of them in particular ran away from home to work on the railroad when he was 14 (he lied about his age) and stayed with big trains until he was forced to retire because of health issues. We discuss the "foamer" term sometimes, and it the worst of 4 terms that he uses to classify train lovers. The other 3 (including "railfans, "rail buffs", etc.) are all reasonable levels of "rail love". "Foamer" is how he descibes someone that has taken it over the top. I believe that fits Matt's behavior at times perfectly...
All of this being said, I enjoy the show, I just think it can be made better. I hope that everyone here can state their opinions while still being civil and decent - that is the point of discussion. Thanks so much for reading what I have to say. Happy railfanning and may God bless you all!
Jenny - a train-crazy girl....
