Second Season?

Dec 23, 2008 1:21 PM
I haven't heard anything yet, but i really hope History picks up Extreme Trains for a second season.

I've really enjoyed the series so far, and with a few tweaks like settling down Matt just a bit (I like his enthusiasm for the most part, but it could be toned down a bit) I think the series could really take off.

For those that liked the show (and many really did) I say write to the History Channel in NY, or send an e-mail. Even those that didn't love it should write in and give their suggestions for improvement. Showing interest is the key - neg and pos, this show has certainly received a lot of interest.

I'd love to see episodes on:

The NYC Subway
Metro North Commuter Rail
CP Holiday Train
CSX
Chicago El
BNSF in the Rockies
Saginaw, TX - Freight Trains

The first season was quite interesting even though the host was a bit "extreme" at times. A little fact checking is in order too. Overall, it was a good series. More episodes on modern-day railroads as well as historical insight into their predecessors would be great. Thanks History Channel and Merry Christmas!

I have really enjoyed the show, I am looking forward to season two (and more)

Just give Matt some calming tea before he shoots the episodes and all will be good. Also some of the technical descriptions (ie Dynamic Brakes) were incorrect, please get a better technical description.

Thanks

I would definitely like to see a second season.

Another train that you might want to profile woould be the Tropicana Juice train which carries OJ from Florida to points up north.

You could also do an episode on tourist/preservation railroads like Strasburg, East Broad Top, etc.

If History channel doesn't renew this show for a second season, there will literally be a revolt in my home! My three year old son Ben is obsessed with trains and this is his favorite show! Please renew this show or else I will be subjected to watching only the first season forever!!

I'd like to see them go into a little more detail into the Salt Lake City engineer school. The 'simulators' that are talked about in the Fruit Express show are just a small part of that training. Also, yes they go a little overboard about how hard it is to run a train these days, seriously, i could teach my 13 year old brother to run a train at max speed in a week. The real engineers were the steam engine guys, they did work, I still work with the last remnants of steam firemen, and WOW, they had to know a lot about their engines before they touched a throttle. Now, I work with some guys, who are licensed engineers, that still do not know how to start an engine. Todays engineers are for the most part sad shadows of a lost craft.

I really hope this show sticks around for a second (and third) season. I like the host - he seems a bit excited, but then again, I would be too if I got a chance to ride on some of those trains. If I could pick a few topics for new episodes, I'd choose:

- NYC subway
- Light rail lines (e.g.: Portland Oregon)
- A historical look at some of the passenger trains run by Union Pacific and others that are now gone.
- Look at how one of the large freight yards work.
- A show about some of the now-gone smaller lines (like the Delaware and Hudson) that have been absorbed by larger ones.
- The future of railroads. Look at some of the new locomotive technology that is being developed for greener railroads (e.g.: GE Hybrid locomotives)

It would also be fun to give some airtime to model railroaders, although I guess that wouldn't necessarily qualify as "extreme".

One thing I noticed from this first season that I was surprised was missed. With the show about the steam train to Cheyenne, I was hoping to hear a little about the 4004 Big Boy locomotive that is in Cheyenne. I stopped by there when I drove through a couple years ago and snapped some photos, and would have liked to hear some historical information on that big machine.

In any case - love the show. I hope to see more of it!

I'm with you all on wanting a second season.

I'd also like to add my own requests:

NYS&W from Sparta, NJ to Syracuse, NY

Any NYC to Buffalo route, but preferably that of the Phoebe Snow.

LV from Allentown to Sayre

My 7-year old adores Extreme Trains, and, while Matt is a little hyper for my personal tastes, I can handle it, and the Little Guy shares his enthusiasm. We often hear him narrating his toy trains as though he were on the show. There are much worse things a kid could do with his time.
Anyway, we would love another season! Here are our suggested topics:
the Red cars in LA.
Commuter trains in general.
Send Matt to Asia to ride the maglev, or some of the amazing trains in India.
Or to Europe to check out all the different commuter trains there (yes, Mommy loves her some commuter trains).
Train museums, or model trains too.
What does one have to do if one wants to grow up to work on trains (as my Little Guy plans to do)?

He needs to get good school grades, College helps and will probably be mandatory in a few years. Be physically fit and learn to be focused. Keep your railroad interest on a low profile and remember that working railroaders are the ones that know the business. No matter how much reading you do, the knowledge you acquire as a railfan probably doesn't apply to the situation at hand.

BTW, Spencer Shops in North Carolina is one of the finest museums in North America. Check it out sometime.

I think it is a good show and the host is kinda hyper. I think History is trying to aim the show at the people that are everyday people, not realy giving a care about a train except the fact that they are "noisy in the way and just plain annoying". I for one like trains. The series needs some work but it might be able to be worked out, hopefully...
Maybe do a segment about the coal lines in the Powder River Basin in Eastern Wyoming. Sure the UP's Bailey yard is the biggest in the country and there is a tripple track line from North Platte to Council Bluffs. There is a even busier line in the PRB 4 tracks yep FOUR History and there are plenty of trains! Moving a major power source of the United States.
History could let the people running the trains give insight to the job that they are doing. Give a more in depth history of the equipment and well I guess none of this will work since there has to be so many stupid COMMERCIALS!!! AND the host and his "glory shots aplenty" Tone down Mr. "Conductor" Personally I think he is just an crummy actor on Red Bull (crummy well I could have said something worse).

If you really want to please a friend of mine, do a historical version of a long gone line, the Shawmut. I don't know too much about that one myself, but my friend even models it in HO. And I wouldn't mind knowing more about what they (the Shawmut) line carried, routes, etc. Could be very interesting.
