Extreme Trains Supporters

Hello to everyone out there who enjoys this show! I encourage you to post about something from the show you enjoyed, perhaps show your support for those that have not yet discovered the joy that railroading provides to many in our country today. This is not a discussion on historical controversy or inaccuracy, but a way that others may show their love of railroading, no matter how small. I hope that people everywhere who watch this show will take something away from it; not necessarily the whole history of railroading, but a true wonder for the builders and movers of our economy and this nations vast wealth. And please, to all those out there who do not watch or enjoy this show or network, instead tell us about your own experience in railroading, or how you came to be a railfan in general.

One word, this is the History Channel and I am sure you all love railroading, but this show is not exactly a reality show, but it is still too short on history. This host says, amazing and cool too many times. I swear I am watching a human weapon type show, about railroads. One thing, this show needs more history.

15 minutes into the show and I LIKE IT! I'm a lifelong railfan and locomotive engineer for a shortline railroad and it's kinda cool seeing how the class one guys get it done. After reading the negative rsponses so far I have to say that there is history being interspersed with the modern stuff. I just wish they would dedicate an episode to shortlines since the majority of car load freight originates with us little guys. Like I tell our CSXT interchange crews "you might be longer than us but we're just as wide"......

Thanks Engineer503 for your input! I understand and am quite sympathetic to everyone out there who are less than enthused toward this show, but I would like for you to hold off any negative comments toward the History Channel to another forum. Back on a happier track, I am very much enjoying this show, particularly Norfolk Southern's involvement. People never seem to realize that the cities they live in and the jobs they work at would not be possible, especially in New England, where coal powers and heats many areas. I actually had never seen Horseshoe Curve before, so this general look at it was very impressive. If anyone else learned or saw something they did not expect while watching this show, I would encourage them to post it here, for all to read. Thanks all for your support!

i would like to invite matt to set in with some of the people that play a vital role in moving trains...dispatchers...it would blow his mind exactly what each dipatcher is responsible for each day...great show

What an embarassment! Extreme Trains should be renamed to Extreme Stupidity. The show was hardly about trains. More about the "host" waving his arms, yelling, sticking his face in the camera, and acting stupid. Sad day for any and all rail fans. Sad day for the History Channel. Sad day for the American people. I think I'm going to be sick.

each dispatcher is responsible for moving men and equipment safley and efficiently from one place to another while trying to keep track of all maintinance and signal employees...to give all departments equal time without injury or delay to the trains...its harder than it looks

I am happy that this show has been aired, and was pleased to see the obvious cooperation provided by NS in tonight's segment on the unit coal train (NS is my favorite road since they made possible the 'return' of steam in the early 1980's by resurrecting the #1218). But the host is just too TOO over the top. Someone keep him away from coffee, Red Bull or whatever else makes him so annoying. Railroading is an industry that values safety and predictability. The only thing "Extreme" about the program tonight was Matt's wild arm movements and his overly dramatic comments about purported life-threatening situations every 30 seconds. Let's hope the upcoming segments incorporate more real history and less sensational commentary from good ol' Matt.

Thank goodness we have another good railroad show on tv. There are very few. I am from Oregon and am devout UP and BNSF (I miss the old Cascade green), but I always like to see more railroads outside my area. I was fasinated with the fact that coal was traveling such a short distance, yet faced many of the same factors a western railroad has. I also have to give props to the host. It is easy to knock people while hiding behind a computer screen. I imagine that anyone who loves the smell of diesel would be giddy at the opportunity he had. I look forward to seeing the two shows in my neck of the woods, and watching an enthusiastic host live his dream.

Its to bad that in showing how NS moves its coal trains it failed to show what go's into moving a train like that such as the role of the dispatcher and maybe handing off that coal train to another road such as Mikes Pan Am RY to places such as Bow, NH, mikes home rails. Mike also needs to stay away from the coffee, he's way overboard as a host. Just relax and tell us whats going on without all the drama buddy.

It is indeed very easy to sit and judge people. He's passionate about his craft, big deal. I personally know Matt, in fact we play in a rock band together, www.myspace.com/afterblack. Check us out. I thought the show was great And I dont even like trains. He made it interesting to watch.

I agree mostly with J-Oregon. Probably 'cause I'm just over the border in Idaho. Matt's antics nearly ruined the show! He was ok as an announcer. I liked the photos and information. If matt really wants "wow" he should read about the Cascade Tunnel that the Great Northern built. I will watch again, but may have to use the Madden (mute) button, or I could be sick too.

Trainscotch, The show will in fact be visiting the Cascade Tunnel in a later episode, so I hope we will all enjoy that. To all others out there, Yes,Matt is a little over the top, but let us also remember that he is an avid railfan, and is talking next to some very loud machinery, so he must raise his voice. This is something that plagues many shows with loud equipment, and Matt can't help it. I hope to see the episode on Amtrak from Seattle to Chicago. When I traveled this summer, the floods forced me to get off in Minnesota and bus the res of the way, so if I get to see what I missed, that would be great! Thanks to everyone out there with their opinion!

being an engineers wife i hear about trains all the time ,but this show gave me a chance to be in the cab and this is as close as i have ever come to seeing what his job is like.i think i would probably have been as blown - away as Matt, it is exciting to be involved in something you are totally absorbed with, and i envy him.my husband and i watched this together and he was surprised they didn't use dp power .he thought Matt was a bit wired but this is from a guy that i have to check his pulse to see if he is still with it.

Anyone recall the name of the site location shown in the show where huge cranes are used to raise the engines and move them to various stations. Is it Juiliana? Can't recall, exactly. They said it's larger than 360 football fields or something...one of the worlds largest such servicing sites. Thanks.
