So what would you carry in your backpack...?

I have no idea what the explorers and porters carried in their back packs but I can guess it was nothing but the essentials -- you know the old adage from Mom/Dad "If you're bringing it, you're carrying it!"

Besides extra socks, Fruit-of-the-Looms, and personal toiletries what else do you think the explorers packed in their personal back packs?

Then, what would you include in your backpack that you could not live without? I'm thinking bug spray, sunscreen, and a hat. But what about items for winding down like a deck of cards, reading material, journal -- ?

I would carry a fire starter, a change of socks and underwear, a water bottle, a knife, multi tool, a machete, some rope, a tarp, a sleeping bag, a compass, and of course a map. I would have the clothes on my back, and a good hat. Now, that's an expedition.

Heh, I found a generic list of what Benedict carries in his backpack posted on his website. The list is in response to a question on the FAQ page: What do you carry, on a typical expedition – beyond the obvious sleeping bag etc?

Go to http://www.benedictallen.com/questions-answers.htm

The question/answer is a good ways down the page, keep scrolling.
