Hardest part of the Expedition?

As the Explorers and porters made their way to Ujiji from Zanzibar, which section of the expedition trip was the hardest? I'm torn between the night they camped near the hippos, snakes and hyenas without the safety of a boma and dirty water OR the time crossing with the donkeys carrying the water.
What's your take and why?
